Minutes

1. Topic: Welcome to new members Marcus Williamson, Political Science, and Stephen Dickey, Math
2. Topic: College Council

Discussion:  Ann gave a brief overview of the College Council meeting and current events with them and other councils on campus.  She suggested to review the Staff Council’s design because it seems to be effective.  We may want to use what is working well from their council set up.  Kim will be the Adjunct Council representative to future College Council meetings.

Action:  Kim and Rebecca will reach out to Leslie Quinn.  Kim will request to have the Adjunct Council Report added to the College Council agenda.

3. Topic: Communication with Adjunct Faculty

Discussion:  Discussed how we field Adjunct Faculty concerns, research the concerns, and find resolutions.  We currently have an Adjunct Council email address in place for the council, but it may not meet the needs and goals of this group.  We also discussed anonymity concerns when using the email.  We discussed having division representatives share the meeting minutes to their division Adjunct Faculty.  This will encourage communication between Adjunct Faculty and their division representatives.

Actions:  Members of the Adjunct Council will share the meeting minutes with their division.

4. Topic: Possible partnerships with other councils or groups

Discussion:  Ideas such as partnering with Staff Council and Student Senate were discussed.  There may be a few Adjunct Faculty who participate in more than one council.

Action:  This will be ongoing.

5. Topic: Adjunct PLD (Professional Learning Day)

Discussion:  Brainstormed ideas for PLDs.  Some ideas are a below.

• “Facilitating Conversations about Sensitive Topics”—guest speaker Loretta Summers.
• Learning about resources for students
  • Access services, Writing Center, Academic Achievement Center, Math Resource Center, etc.
• Learning about resources for adjuncts
  • Grants for conferences and travel, free classes, faculty IDs, etc.
• Sharing best practices in the classroom and online
• Using basic and advanced options in Canvas
  • Adjunct Faculty share tips and tricks
  • Possible to have Ed Tech representatives assist

Action:  Kim will send out an email to ask for volunteers to work on these different sessions.  Members will also brainstorm creative names for the PLD and sessions.  Kim and Rebecca will contact Farrell about working on an Adjunct orientation session.

6. Topic: Adjunct pay outside of contract hours

Discussion:  The involvement of Adjunct Faculty on this council was something requested by the College, and therefore the members should be paid.  The positions were initially advertised as paid positions.  This topic has been brought to the attention of other councils as well as Dr. McCloud.

Action:  We hope to have an update before our next meeting.
