Minutes

  1. Topic: ABC Report

Discussion: Jeff reported that Tai Edwards and Jim Leiker presented material to Dr. Bowne to support paying Adjunct Faculty members for their work on the Adjunct Council.  Dr. Bowne and Dr. McCloud’s final decision is expected at the ABC meeting on May 2.  Other information is available on the ABC minutes.

Action: Jeff will attend his last ABC meeting as the Adjunct Council Representative on May 2 and will report information to the Adjunct Council.

  1. Topic: College Council Report

Discussion: Kim reported that the College Council discussed the recent decision about VERB early retirement, vacation and sick leave, and the extent of marketing that instructors can do without involving the Marketing Department at JCCC.

Action: Kim will continue as the College Council Representative for the 2022-2023 school year.

  1. Topic: Ed Camp Report

Discussion: Jeff reported that the first Ed Camp was successful; Kim and Rebecca agreed.  They are working on getting the video and meeting notes together to post on the Adjunct Faculty Community Canvas site.  Future Ed Camps could possibly focus on one topic.  Jeff suggested planning three Ed Camps per semester.

Action: F22 Ed Camps will be discussed at the next Adjunct Council meeting in August.

  1. Topic: Adjunct Faculty Orientation

Discussion: Kim has been working on getting the planners all together.  If any other Adjunct Council members want to work on this, they can contact Kim.

Action: Those who are planning the orientation will meet on May 6 at 3:30 via Zoom.

  1. Topic: Adjunct Faculty F22 PLD

Discussion: This will be in person on either Friday evening August 19 or Saturday morning on August 20.  Farrell reported that last events have been a conference style with a speaker, breakout sessions, poster sessions, and raffle giveaways.  Discussion about topics included “crucial conversations” (based on the Grenny et al book Crucial Conversations; the possibility of having a book club to read the book was also discussed) or an Ed Camp style.  All Adjunct Faculty could be invited to plan this PLD.  Farrell emphasized, however, that faculty would not be paid for working on the PLD.

Action: Rebecca will send out an email to invite Adjunct Faculty.  Adjunct Council member should contact Rebecca if they are interested.

 Topic: Adjunct Faculty Handbook

Discussion: The current Adjunct Faculty Handbook (available in the Adjunct Faculty Resources Canvas site) is digital, so revisions shouldn’t be too time-consuming.  The handbook and the planned orientation have some overlap.

Action: This will be a task to take on in the F22 semester.

  1. Topic: F22 Adjunct Council Officers

Discussion:  Kim and Rebecca were re-elected as Co-Chairs.  Kim will also continue as the College Council Representative.  For F22, the Council needs a new ABC Representative and two Recorders/Note-Takers.  Per the bylaws, any current Adjunct Council members who are unable to continue need to submit their resignation to Kim and Rebecca.  For vacancies, they will contact the divisions to ask for replacement members.

Action: Rebecca will send out an email requesting nominations for the open positions and inquiring about any resignations.

  1. Topic: Other Discussion

Discussion: Jeff shared information about a bill before the US House regarding retirement benefits for part-time employees, including part-time temporary employees.

Action: Jeff will email the Council members the information he had received from someone else.

  1. The next Adjunct Council meeting will be Thursday, August 18 at 3:30 pm.
