Section I
Teaching Philosophy
Learning requires access to knowledge. While an instructor will guide a student towards it, the student’s initial exposure to a unit of knowledge will only be as good as the instructor’s comprehension, therefore the instructor must have not only appropriate knowledge, but growing knowledge. This is accomplished through exposure to accurate and current information, constantly developing methods of delivering this knowledge, and the ability to direct students towards resources containing further knowledge.
To maintain these targets, the information itself must be accessible in the most effective manners. Concepts that drive access are as simple as hours of availability, to as complicated as resource selection and content delivery. To maximize the impact on a student, knowledge should exist as clearly identifiable objects; visible from multiple, well-carved paths; all accessible from relevant directions, both in how they attempt to get there; and also how a previously attained goal will lead to it.
Personal Statement of Professional Goals
This target year, I’d hoped to target the primary use of my time, which should be targeted at maintaining, growing, and guaranteeing access to our digital resources. Service as a faculty member allows me better perspective of the needs of our institution, both in student and staff interactions. I was able to make progress on many goals, most of which are by their nature always changing and never complete. By targeting these goals, I’ve been able to continue making progress towards on campus. With that in mind, my monitored goals were
- Improving the efficiency in website design adn digital content delivery
- Increasing the rate at which our collections grow
- Reviewing metadata and integration into national collections
- Applying for and receiving a sabbatical

Projects on Campus
DIGITAL PROJECTS
The digital projects at JCCC provide access to materials while preserving and archiving them. A lot of work goes into scanning negatives, photographing objects, and creating metadata that adheres to industry standards.
Other collaborators include the Library Technical Services, Campus Ledger, the Fashion Merchandising Department, and former campus photographer, Bret Gustafson.
SCHOLARSPACE @ JCCC
The campus institutional repository collects the publications, presentations, and creative or scholarly output of our campus community. By working with publishers and campus communities (such as the Sabbatical Committee), we can create a freely available resource and portrait of the scholarship generated at Johnson County Community College.
