Improve efficiency in website design and digital content delivery

Accomplishments

  • CMS content delivery
    • Widget creation and embedded material into Desire2Learn (Figure 1). This allowed faculty to deliver within course shellf:
      • Summon Search
      • Library link
      • Chat
      • LibGuides
      • Schedule one-on-one meetings with librarians for additional help.
    • LibGuides LTI into Canvas (Figure 2)
      • Guides are implemented directly into course shell. Can be general or specific, and guide can be geared all the way down to individual section without impacting anyone else’s course.
      • Allows specific guides to be implemented down to the section level for guide choice of implementation.

  • Website path designs
    • Over course of portfolio, several database categories were analyzed. New categories were added and old categories were removed. The goal was to increase access to our databases via relevant subjects New categories included “Local,” which contains many of our homegrown digital collections, increasing access.
    • BrowZine was implemented into several layers of the library for ease of access to journals, with a marked increase in usage over the last five years as integrations rolled out. Two targeted examples:
      • The web interface replaced our “Find Specific Journal” homepage link, adding a more user-friendly interface for journal and article discovery when searching for specific titles.
      • Second, the integration into Summon, allowing users to browse the article in the context of the issue it came from, increased discoverability of resources (Figure 3.)
      • Figure 3. BrowZine’s Summon integration allows users to travel directly into the context of the issue, providing another opportunity for resource discovery

    • From the aspect of fiscal responsibility and reliability, several resources were impacted in different ways
      • We’ve canceled our commitment with Bepress, allowing our IR to move to a different platform. As explained in my sabbatical presentation, this has potential to save us over $19,000 a year.
      • We also moved from our self-hosted version of CONTENTdm to the cloud-hosted environment.

Figure 4. As BrowZine was implemented integrated into different resources and replaced other discovery tools, its usage took off. Natural dips between semesters are visible.
