Community in quarantine

Community in Quaratine — For 22-year-old artist Casey Mispagel, painting has been keeping her pretty busy throughout this crazy time. This piece is titled “Pigs Might as well be Flying.” “I used acrylic paint, markers, pen, colored pencils, and glitter embellishment”, Mispagel said. “My inspiration stemmed from my dependence on the sun during quarantine. The flying pigs are kind of obvious. Times are just weird and it feels like anything could happen next, but creating art keeps me optimistic.”

A great way to pass some time while still being productive is gardening. For mom Amanda Tyrrell-Stewart, the plants she grows are useful for cooking. Here are rows of radishes in one of her planters.

For 18-year-old Liberty North High School senior Cory Johnson, quarantine has allowed time for creating clothing. This piece is made out of a custom blanket that happens to depict a scene from Johnson’s favorite movie. For Johnson, this won’t be a one-time thing. “I taught myself how to make these shirts when I took fashion design last semester,” Johnson said. “All the pieces I make will be for sale.” You can find his clothing on Instagram @infinite.pieces.

Springtime has brought a storm of color and good weather, and 20-year-old creator Amatista Rodriguiz-Rush has taken full advantage of it “These self-portraits are titled ‘Pink Lemonade Dreams’ and I was inspired to shoot because I love spring and wanted to capture a little bit of my spring here at home in quarantine. It was nice to be able to get creative and dress up for a little while,” Rush said.

For 24-year-old graphic artist, Jack Raybuck, drawing has been a way to stay entertained during lockdown. This piece is titled “FRIENDS” and resulted from doodling characters throughout an afternoon during one long day in lockdown. “Drawing has been an easy way to relax and make happy things out of nothing while I’ve been on lockdown,” Raybuck said.

If you’ve been on social media during lockdown, you might’ve come across a new trend known as Facetime photoshoots. Kansas University student Nate Thompson decided to give this trend a try. “FaceTime shoots bring whole new challenges,” Thompson said. “You can’t change any manual settings that you would have on a DSLR camera. You have to rely on communication on how to place your models and find a light source from within their own homes. Hopefully, the positives from this project will be that… that it improves my skills to direct my models.”
