Faculty Senate Minutes 8-14-14

Lori Paldino took the  minutes:

The first Faculty Senate meeting was held on August 14, the week before classes started.  That’s my excuse for taking so long to get you these minutes!  That, and the meeting was rather uneventful.

College President:  Joe Sopcich spoke to the senate to start the meeting.  He discussed JCCC’s academic master plan, noting that faculty will be asked to participate on the process.   He noted that the strategic plan task forces needed to be populated by faculty members.  Finally, he asked that a representative from the senate volunteer to serve on the search committee for a Vice President of Financial Services.

Dave Davis was elected to serve.

Procedures for Selecting Faculty Representatives to serve on the Strategic Planning Task Forces:  As you know, we took nominations and elected 13 faculty members to the Strategic Plan Task Forces.  The English Department and EAP were well represented.  All faculty, both full-time and adjunct voted. Aside from senate elections, this was probably the first time such an open voting procedure took place for faculty representation on committees.

By Laws:  Vin Clark, president of the senate, presented a revision of the senate by-laws, which made the current by-laws regarding senate elections more specific.  Previously, the divisions were given great latitude in setting out their procedures.  Now, the divisions are asked to file their plan with the senate, among other details.  There were some issues last year with elections, most of which surrounded the replacement of senators who could no longer serve and the divisional election procedures.  Hopefully, the by-law change will fix the problem.  Any change to the by-laws requires 30 days.  We will vote, therefore, at the next meeting.

Finally, we spent time electing senators to subcommittees:

Adjunct Affairs Committee:

All Adjuncts are already on this committee.
Judy Guzzy and Nathan Jones were elected to this committee.

Communication Committee:

Rhonda Barlow, Christine Buta, and Terry Helmick were elected to this committee.

Elections Committee:

Steve Giambrone, John McNally, and James Hopper were elected to this committee.

Designation of Senate Representative on the Educational Affairs Committee’s Ad Hoc Degree Committee:

This committee will be reviewing the AA and AS degree programs.

Since they are already serving on both this committee and faculty senate, Melanie Harvey made a motion and Irene Schmidt seconded it to designate Joe Weis and John McNally as the senate representatives to and from this committee. The motion passed.

We postponed voting on senate representation on board of trustees’ committees.

We meet again September 11 at 3:30 PM in RC 270.
