Sleuthing Series — Suzuki method violin

JCCC Archives presents the Sleuthing Series, where every Tuesday, we bring you an image from our past and ask you to help us find out more!

1.  Tiny violins for tiny musicians.

 What We Know

This picture is from December 1982.  The log calls this “Suzuki Method Violin,” and, because the students are all children, we might assume that this is a Community Education class.  Suzuki violin classes for children 3-12  years of age were offered through Community Education the following spring.  Those classes were taught by Hilary D. Kolmas, an experienced instructor and musician.

What We Don’t Know

  • Is this connected to a particular event?
  • Who are these children?
  • Who is teaching this class?

If You Know More…

  • Contact  librarians: Anita Gordon Gilmore (agordong@jccc.edu, ext. 4369) or John Russell (jrussell@jccc.edu, ext. 3284).  You may also comment below!

For More Information…

  • The College Archives holds college catalogs and class schedules dating back to some of the earliest programs and classes.
  • The College Archives also has pamphlets for the variety of Community Education offerings in the 1970s and 1980s.

Sleuthing Series – Kite Flying

JCCC Archives presents the Sleuthing Series, where every Tuesday, we bring you an image from our past and ask you to help us find out more!

Two individuals flying a kite.

What We Know

This picture is from 1980. In the background is the intersection of 111th Street and Quivira Road. That large building is still there, but the home (far right, in trees) is gone. If you enlarge the image, you can see trailers between them, likely indicating construction.

What We Don’t Know

  • When did 111th become College Blvd?
    (We know, but do you?)
  • Were the kites for a class project?
  • What did the construction mentioned above become?
  • What month is this?

Sleuthing Series – Horse Donation

JCCC Archives presents the Sleuthing Series, where every Tuesday, we bring you an image from our past and ask you to help us find out more!

three women and a horse

What We Know

  • This picture is dated November 16, 1983, back when JCCC had an equine program.  The person next to the horse was identified as Harriet Ridinger, Equine Studies Coordinator.  Foundation Director, Sharyl Wallace, is on the far right.
  • In the photographer’s notes, it simply states “Horse Donation.” That’s about all we know about this photo.
  • Most of the Equine Studies classes and activities were held at White Fox Manor, south of Olathe and nearly 10 miles from the main campus.  The program featured care and grooming, riding styles, training, judging, and more.  Students often learned through competition.  The expense of the program hastened its demise.

What We Don’t Know

  • Who are the women?
  • Where was this picture taken?
  • What was the horse’s name?

Little is known about Equine Studies activities on campus, but clearly there were some.

Camaraderie was definitely a part of the program, and Sheba, the doberman, stayed central to it all.

Five individuals standing in a bare room, surrounding an automotive engine

What We Know

We know that this photo is from October of 1972. We also know that this was a Continuing Education class, because we did not have an Automotive Program at the time. We also know that it had to be held off the current campus.

What We Don’t Know

  • Who are the people in the photo?
  • Are these instructors or students?
  • Where was this class being held?
  • Was this a credit on non-credit class?

Did you know that Johnson County Community College has an Archives? The JCCC Archives is dedicated to JCCC history and maintains the College’s historic records, photographs, newspapers, and other ephemeral materials that track the programs, policies, and student activities that take place at JCCC. This photograph from the openning of JCCC at its temporary location in Merriam, KS in September 1969 is an example of some of the historic photographs of JCCC.

Tired??

spotlight05-15-13
At this time of year students and instructors alike are EXHAUSTED! Getting enough sleep just doesn’t seem possible. The November 2003 issue of Scientific American has a good article on the how and whys of sleep. And, if you think that you are sleep deprived, the February 2013 issue deals with “astronaut insomnia.” They’re not exactly in a good location to go out and take a long walk to relax you for sleep.
