Sleuthing Series — BNSF Partners

JCCC Archives presents the Sleuthing Series, where every Tuesday, we bring you an image from our past and ask you to help us find out more!

Burlington Northern executives meeting with Dr. Carlsen and Don Goldenbaum in February 1987. A model of the Industrial Technical Center, dedicated in 1988 is on the table in front of them. Dr Carlsen is standing second from the left. Don Goldenbaum,, executive director of the Business and Industry Institute, is on the far right. Mike Voelker, dir. of training for Burlington Northern is between them.

What We Know

  • A conversation in 1985 between Mike Voelker, director of training for Burlington Northern, and Dr. Don Goldenbaum, director of JCCC’s Business and Industry Institute, grew far beyond what they imagined.
  • Thousands of Burlington Northern employees are trained annually through the National Academy of Railroad Sciences.
  • The Burlington Northern Foundation established faculty awards for research and teaching excellence at JCCC in 1986
  • In 1987, the partnership was awarded a presidential citation by Vice President George Bush, calling it a model of “cooperation between industry and education.”
  • The ITC building was completed in 1988 as the primary home of this program.
  • The National Academy of Railroad Sciences was established at JCCC in 1993-94.  The nation’s first associate degree program in railroad operations was born thru NARS.

What We Don’t Know

  • We were unable to identify one person in the picture above, but assume he is a Burlington Northern executive.  Do you know?
  • Who can you identify below?

From the JCCC Archives

Did you know that Johnson County Community College has an Archives? The JCCC Archives is dedicated to JCCC history and maintains the College’s historic records, photographs, newspapers, and other ephemeral materials that track the programs, policies, and student activities that take place at JCCC. This photograph from the openning of JCCC at its temporary location in Merriam, KS in September 1969 is an example of some of the historic photographs of JCCC.

If you are interested in the development of JCCC, or have any questions about JCCC history stop by the College Archives in LIB 353C and talk to Molly Khan, the College Archivist, to explore the collections.

Get a jump start on research with LibGuides

We keep on making guides, and keeping our older ones current.  LibGuides let us deliver comprehensive information on specific topics (like this Autism guide), give brief walkthroughs on products (like this guide on finding nursing articles (with video!)) or keep you up-to-date on what the library’s up to (like this New Books guide).

Check them out as a good starting point for research papers, and never hesitate to contact us with suggestions to improve them, or topics you might want us to cover!

No new items today: settle for a slow jam?

The weekend! It’s coming! We hope classes are still going well, but never hesitate to ask us for help. Honestly, we’re pretty agreeable folks, and willing to help. Heck, if you’re not reading this in an RSS reader or mobile device, you can probably see our Chat Reference to your right. Give it a go!

The Only New Item Added Today

The only item we’ve added to our catalog today is a romance called Wedding Season. Here’s the first sentence from the description:

Sarah is a wedding planner hiding a rather inconvenient truth – she doesn’t believe in love.

I think you know where the story goes from there. So if romances are your thing, then it’s your lucky day up in JCCC.  While you’re here, check out other books in the McNaughton Collection: leisure reading on loan to academic institutions.  They’re on the second floor next to the circulation desk (as seen below).

An Abundance of Opposing Viewpoints

You may be aware of our Opposing Viewpoints database. However, if you have a paper or interest based around a topic that might be attached to a controversy or be related to current issues, you might want to check out our collection of Opposing Viewpoints published collections.  They take on a topic, highlight issues within the topic, and present scholarly articles and opinion pieces to explain the pros and cons within.

A quick list of some of the new topics added or updated:

  • Fashion Industry
  • Mass Media
  • Male and Female Roles
  • Latin America
  • Immigration
  • Global Warming
  • Debt
  • Culture of Beauty
  • Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Copyright Infringement
  • Gangs
  • Behavioral Disorders

… and so on.  Check’em out.
