Welcome!
Welcome to the Johnson County Community College Department of Theatre! If you are a potential student looking at the theatre here at JCCC, you have come to the right place. This website is designed to give you all the information you need to get involved and to stay involved once you’re here.
Let’s Get to Work!
Our Theatre Department is extremely active! Along with producing six shows per year, we offer a wide variety of classes and scholarships in performance, technical and general theatre, professional workshops, theatre trips to London and New York and engagement with local professional theatres. Our students find themselves on stage, backstage, stage managing or designing in our state-of-the-art theatre spaces right away because we feel the best way to learn is to jump in, roll up your sleeves and get to work! Our experienced faculty will challenge you to work to your capacity and then help you to find the next step in your journey once you are finished at JCCC.
Opportunities for you!
We have an extensive offering of Performance classes including Acting, Movement, Voice & Dialect, Directing, & Improvisation. Our Intro to Theatre, Script Analysis and Business of Acting courses help students with a strong foundation in theatre overall. Our Design/Tech classes such as Costume Construction, Stagecraft, Stage Makeup, Theatrical Design, & Costume Design prepare you for opportunities to design, build or work backstage on our mainstage productions. We engage Professional guest artists to mentor students in areas of Stage Management, Props, Scenic, Lighting, & Sound. Recent productions have showcased student original music compositions, fight captain work and original artwork. We also have the New Works Initiative, a free program for developing and producing original works by JCCC student playwrights!
The Mission
At JCCC, the Mission of the academic Theatre program is to prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions. Therefore, we offer a strong foundation in analysis, design, stage management and performance so students have the most professional, creative auditions and portfolios possible. Our goal is for you to not only get accepted to good four-year programs, but to obtain scholarships whenever possible. Although this is our focus, not every student is seeking a transfer. However, our relationships with local theatres and area professional theatres helps students find internships and jobs, whether in stage management, design or performance if that is their path. Either way, we want to guide you to that next step on your professional theatrical career path.
We Have a Place For You!
Regardless of your ability, experience, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, politics, age, physical or neurological ability, socioeconomic class or diverse perspectives, we want you to come and work in the theatre with us. The college and our department have been doing a lot of work to start conversations and really listen to be a better partner to all who come through our doors. We want all our students to feel welcome, and we are working to make that happen in our classes, productions and individual interactions. We aren’t where we want to be yet, but we’re actively learning, listening and implementing actions to make this department your Artistic Home.
