Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs)

Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences are research projects that are embedded into a regular course. Rather than traditional lab experiences, I prefer to teach students about science by doing science in my lab courses. This way, students get the opportunity to have this important experience as part of a regular course they needed anyway. In CHEM 122 Principles of Chemistry, students collect and test soil samples from restored prairie areas. In CHEM 140 Principles of Organic and Biological Chemistry, students extract, separate, and test antibiotics and antimicrobial compounds made by soil bacteria isolated by students from the JCCC microbiology labs.
