Specifically, Dr. Brian Donovan will give an insightful exploration of Taylor Swift’s cultural impact, and the phenomenon of fans developing deep emotional connections with celebrities.

He adeptly examines how these connections, fostered by Swift’s music and public persona, create a powerful sense of community among her followers, known as “Swifties”.

“To outsiders these behaviors may seem simplistic or cult-like,” Donovan said. “But they are a source of what sociologists call collective effervescence.”

Through compelling examples and cultural analysis, Donovan illustrates how these fan relationships go beyond mere admiration. They inspire Swifties to engage in prosocial behaviors, such as charitable initiatives, advocacy, and collaborative projects aimed at social good.

His work highlights instances where fans have come together to support causes that resonate with Swift’s themes of empowerment and resilience, demonstrating the transformative potential of fandom. By emphasizing the positive social change that can arise from these connections, Donovan underscores the idea that fandom can serve as a catalyst for building meaningful relationships and networks.

Donovan’s findings reveal that the emotional ties formed through shared admiration not only enhance individual experiences, but also contribute to a collective sense of purpose and community, ultimately showcasing the profound influence of art and celebrity in fostering collaboration and compassion.

Donovan is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Kansas, specializing in gender and American culture. He teaches a class on “The Sociology of Taylor Swift”, and advises the university’s Swift Society club. He has spent years interviewing and researching not just Swift or her fans, but the cultural and sociological changes that have happened due to her music, making his speech more true to fact with real analysis and examples.

This presentation will be open to all.
