It has become ingrained in our vocabulary.

But, the JCCC event to be held on Oct. 8 and 9, Multitasking Mayhem, takes a dim view of the idea, especially in terms of actual studying. Mono tasking is a preferred method, so that studying will be more fluid and focused instead of being cluttered and convoluted.

Danielle Gallegos, Lead Success Coach at JCCC, had her own spin in the event when asked about this year’s Multitasking Mayhem.

What exactly is the multitasking event about?

“Multitasking Mayhem is a quick, interactive pop-up event where students learn the difference between multitasking and mono tasking through a fun, 5-10 minute coaching activity. It’s designed to challenge common myths about productivity and help students discover smarter ways to manage their time and focus.”

Is this the first year of the event?

“Not at all! This is our third semester running the event, and it’s been a hit every time. Students consistently walk away surprised by what they learn – and how much more effective mono tasking can be.”

What does “take the challenge” mean?

“It’s a hands-on activity where students try to multitask and then mono task, comparing their performance. The challenge reveals how multitasking can actually slow you down and reduce accuracy – something you have to experience to believe!”

What’s the difference between multitasking and mono tasking? What will students gain?

“Multitasking is switching between tasks rapidly, while mono tasking is focusing on one task at a time. Students will gain insight into how their brains work, why focus matters, and how to apply this knowledge to study smarter – not harder.”

How would you define productivity?

“Productivity isn’t about doing more things – it’s about doing the right things well. It’s the ability to focus your energy and attention to complete tasks efficiently and effectively.”

Have you done the event before yourself?

“Yes! I’ve personally been one of the coaches who have helped run this event, although our whole team of six coaches is involved. It’s always rewarding to see students have that “aha!” moment when they realize how much multitasking is costing them.”

Multitasking Mayhem: A Coach in Your Corner Pop-Up Event will take place on Oct. 8 and 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the second floor of the COM building, around the corner from Study Abroad office.

So many of us are used to multitasking.
