For anyone who’s lived here for a while, you more than likely know that there’s a chance you might get summoned for jury duty. It’s something most people try to avoid, but it’s something that we are taught is central to our democracy. That being said, some actually want to be a part of it. I spoke to Dylan Magwere, a 19-year-old student who is looking forward to doing his civic duty.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something I would love to experience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Magwere not only wants to be a part of the process, but also wants an opportunity to potentially help someone who might need it.<\/p>\n

\u201cDepending on the severity of the crime, some people deserve a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most see jury duty as a burden on their time. However, it’s something that could potentially help our everyday life, whether it is proving someone’s innocence or ensuring those who\u2019ve violated the law are held accountable.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a young African American man, I feel that I could bring some perspective and representation that hasn’t been historically present,\u201d Magwere said.<\/p>\n

Historically, juries have not always been fair. In the modern era, we now have an opportunity to right the wrongs of the past, and jury duty may be a way we can use our current system to make change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
