What tips and tricks should students live by during this enrollment season?

After being accepted into JCCC, students can view their schedules and enroll in classes through their MyJCCC page. Before you can enroll, you must complete the new student orientation through Canvas. After picking your classes and seeing what prerequisites and corequisites you need, it’s time to enroll. View the “Enroll and Pay” tab on your My JCCC page, and select “Add/Drop” to begin searching for your classes. Make sure that none of your class times overlap, and remember to pay before the drop date. It’s easy to stay up to date with all of the important dates through the academic calendar. Now it’s time for the tips and tricks, and there’s no better way to learn than from the students themselves.

“Be right on the enrollment [page during] opening time, so you can enroll as fast as it opens up, because they do fill up pretty quickly,” Nour Saeed said. “If you don’t, probably just wait until the drop date… A lot of spots usually open up because that’s when people [who haven’t paid] get dropped from the classes.”

Saeed has been a student at JCCC for two years. He doesn’t meet with an academic counselor when enrollment time rolls around.

“I just do it all myself because I know what classes I’m taking, but for anyone who doesn’t know what classes they are taking, or they don’t know what requirements are required for their degree, they probably should meet with a counselor,” Saeed said.

On the other hand, fourth-semester student Hanan Mustafa recommends meeting with an academic counselor when enrollment time rolls around.

“They help a lot with deciding what [classes] you want to take. Sometimes you have options of choosing between two different classes and you don’t need both,” Mustafa said.

JCCC student Ilayda Orhan also uses the academic counseling center.

“I have a favorite counselor, Patricia Donaldson,” Orhan said.

That being said, the most important thing of all are the classes, and the best way to get recommendations is from the students.

“I think the title is ‘A Good Life,’” Orhan said.

Mustafa thinks it’s important to complete certain classes early.

“Get their composition one out of the way, and take it online,” Mustafa said.

Saeed mentioned taking classes virtually is also always an option.

“Take any social studies class, like humanities or something, but taking that online would be the best option,” Saeed said.

During this stressful enrollment time, don’t forget to check Rate My Professor and take a deep breath–it’ll all be okay. Early enrollment begins on April 20 at 8 a.m., while open enrollment begins on April 22 at 9 p.m.

With the recent opening of summer enrollment and fall enrollment about to begin, these questions are likely to be the big thing on the minds of returning students: what classes are most recommended?
