Everyone, in one way or another, has been touched by the events of that day. Even for people born after 9/11, I would suspect that they know someone who was affected, a loved one who deployed, a brother or sister who is a firefighter or police officer, or a friend who is serving their country in some capacity.

My life changed that day. I was a Staff Sergeant in the Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. It was just like any other morning in North Carolina. The sun was shining, and it was a hot, humid day. That idyllic day changed the moment we heard a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. We were huddled around the 13-inch TV at the Charge of Quarters desk in the entrance of our barracks, watching the horror of the day unfold. We watched as the second plane struck the South Tower, forcing all of us to come to the realization we were at war. This was confirmed when President George W. Bush announced hours later that we were indeed at war.

I was involved in the Global War on Terrorism and was deployed during that stretch of time to both Afghanistan and Iraq. I spent a total of two years and two months in combat zones. I missed the birth of my first daughter and was home long enough to spend two days with my second daughter after her birth. Many veterans missed births, birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. This aspect of the war on terror is not recognized enough. The toll that this time away took on families and loved ones.

So, to mark this 25th anniversary, we should, as a nation, pause to reflect on all the sacrifices everyone has made since that day. Take a moment to reflect on the day’s impact by thanking a firefighter, a police officer, a veteran, or an active-duty service member for their service.
