8 a.m. Classes

The biggest debate in college is whether or not to take 8 a.m. classes. Will your four years of high school prepare you enough for a Monday and Wednesday 8 a.m. three-hour studio class, a less-than-exciting lecture, or even one where you are expected to talk?

Having an early class gets them out of the way, leaving the rest of the day to work, do hobbies, and complete homework. If you are an early bird, it is a perfect scenario. Waking up early gives you a good concrete routine that will mimic a typical work day.  Another advantage is an empty campus. You will always get the front row parking and an easy walk to class.

On the other hand, you will be tired. With late-night deadlines and cramming for tests, you will find yourself exhausted. This can lead to a decline in focus, attention, and physical skill. The temptation of skipping class will rise and will make your mornings rushed.

Eight a.m. classes will truly make or break your college experience. Make sure you make the right decision for you so you can be successful.

Pack your Backpacks and Study Abroad

Johnson County Community College gives students the opportunity to take their education outside the classroom and into the world through its Study Away program. Students can participate in programs lasting from two weeks to an entire semester and can study in countries such as Japan, Iceland and Ecuador.

One of the biggest benefits of the program is the availability of scholarships and financial aid. JCCC offers study-away scholarships that can help students cover the cost of their programs. Scholarship awards vary depending on factors such as financial need, program length, program cost and academic merit.

Students can also apply for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a federal scholarship for students with financial need. Eligible students could receive up to $5,000 to help pay for an approved study-away program.

Students interested in studying abroad can visit the Global Engagement Office in COM 201. Staff members help students learn about programs, applications, financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
