Political Campaigns and Social Media

Maria Godinez

Professor Terri Easley-Giraldo’s honor forum over politics ran a mock campaign for Overland Park mayor in 2020. In this presentation Maria Godinez will be analyzing the Henkesfiekn campaign’s social media presence in this race and why it was successful.

  1. You have deeply considered the rhetorical situations and audiences with this project and made nice choices. Well done.

  2. Your analysis of political campaigns and of the work you have done with your team is thorough and insightful. I am impressed by your ability to reflect on your team’s intentional decision-making. Great work, Maria! You do not here discuss one aspect of the campaign that moved me as a voter: the personal contact that the candidate made with her constituency. Was that also part of your master plan? How important would you say that was in the end?

  3. Great presentation Maria! You did a strong analysis of your team’s social media strategies while also identifying areas of improvement. Your analysis of the strategic choices you made for social media were well articulated and I think all great choices for the campaign.

I would be curious what you mean by “successful” – while your team did indeed “win” the election, we do not know if it was entirely because of social media. Could it have been due to other campaign factors? Without data of the voters saying they voted for your team because of social media, we aren’t really sure “why” they voted the way they did.

I think you could make the argument that your social media campaign was more strategic than your opponents (rather than successful) and you could have done a direct analysis of both campaigns’ strategies to give analysis. At the end of your presentation you do this very briefly, but I think a more compelling analysis could be more thorough discussion of both campaigns’ social media strategy. Overall, wonderful job and great work on the social media!
