The careers that can be found within the world of theatre may seem endless; from actors and actresses, to stage managers, directors, and designers. However, amongst this sea of technical work and performance, a relatively new field of theatrical study has been hiding- dramaturgy. In this presentation, I will explore what dramaturgy involves, what dramaturgs do, and how I fell in love with dramaturgical work.
Thank you so much for this great presentation, Emma! The career of dramaturge is not as well known as others, so your presentation is timely and very informative. Are there names of dramaturge that non-specialists may recognize? Have dramaturge, on occasion, moved on to directing?
Many thanks!
Anne,
Thank you for watching!
In regards to your question, I am not sure that I have a definite answer. Professions in the theatre world usually flow and intermix with each other. Typically, a single individual needs to versed and proficient in 3-5 different jobs. As shows are constantly opening and closing, it is important to acquire multiple skill sets so an actor/director/dramaturg (for example) can move from job to job quickly. Unless, of course, they are lucky enough to be hired on full-time. Therefore, I am almost positive that there are dramaturge-directors out there!
The work that dramaturges do is no doubt done under many different titles depending on the production house/company. I personally have not gained enough experience, however, to be able to give specific examples. A dramaturge can wear many different hats, as they not only contribute their research to a production, but can also act as the production’s voice to the public. Dramaturges may write blurbs that are then inserted into the program, as well as hold post-show talk backs (and more!).
Great job of presenting this interesting information about an important part of the dramatic production. It opens up another way to participate in the play and influence it with your research and ideas. I like the way you include information from many perspectives, looking at the information from several artistic and historical viewpoints, with the use of technology to enhance the access of the data.
Katherine,
Thank you for your comments! I appreciate you taking the time to watch this presentation.
I agree! I think dramaturgy is very influential and can offer a great opportunity to incorporate not only your factual research, but share your own thoughts and ideas about the play.
How interesting! I think I would have loved to study dramaturgy, had I had the opportunity. What a fun and fulfilling profession. I loved your presentation and appreciate you highlighting the value of the theatre and the hard work that is involved in putting on a successful production.
Allison,
Thank you for taking the time to watch this presentation! I am glad you enjoyed it. I agree, and think it is important to highlight all of the hard work that goes into putting on a play. The process involves the efforts and dedication of more people than one would expect!
