Starting and Running URGE at JCCC

How starting Unite for Reproductive and Gender Equity (URGE) at JCCC gave us leadership skills and the ability to educate others on a topic we are passionate about.

  1. I think it’s an awesome idea to bring URGE to JCCC. Since it has such a wide range of topics and issues that it focuses on, I think getting students involved with it would be incredible so they can 1) stand up for issues they believe are important and 2) learn about new ones that they didn’t really know about. I have realized that a big issue at JCCC is that there are many important things going on in the world and some students simply don’t know about them. I think this would be a great way to further educate our community on issues they may or may not be familiar with.

    1. Hi Maria,

One of my favorite things about URGE is that it covers topics that all relate to the reproductive justice movement. You can’t advocate for reproductive rights without acknowledging the disproportional effects towards minorities, low income people, the LGBTQ+ community, and other groups that are effected more when reproductive rights are restricted.
I do hope that in the future URGE can start and continue important discussions on campus and involve other students that have similar passions!

    1. Thanks for your comment, Dymphna!
I personally have never had to de-escalate conflicts with others who get upset over the subject. Since URGE is so new, we haven’t had many of these experiences.
We have talked about it in our meetings though.
I think it’s important to try to understand what others believe, because they believe in it enough to get upset over it. Next, just listen and be patient. These people often just want to spout all of their opinions. And if they become belligerent or do not leave us alone, then law enforcement or campus police will get involved.

  2. You should both be really proud of founding the URGE chapter at JCCC. This is an especially important and relevant club today, and it’s was great seeing an exposition on what it takes to not only found a club, but to found a club that is founded on altruistic ideals.

    1. Hi Neal,
Thank you so much and I really am proud starting URGE and what we have accomplished with being a brand new club this semester.

  3. Bringing an organization like URGE into JCCC’s community will greatly benefit the school’s diverse opinions on different subjects and update students on many controversial topics in today society. Furthermore create opportunities for students to learn more about sensitive topics such as flag flags in relationships, sexual assault, etc. This is a great project.

    1. Hi Rick,
A big focus of URGE is having those tough conversation such as those about sexual assault, abusive relationships, abortion, and more because although they are tough they need to be discussed! I hope that URGE can continue to have open conversations on campus!

  4. Groups like URGE are fundamental to informing the student public on important issues that seem more important now than ever, especially with the recent news surrounding reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. It’s hard to tackle many of the topics URGE is planning on tackling, but if done well, URGE will have a wonderfully positive impact on campus.I look forward to seeing what URGE will be up to in the near future!
