Certifications: In order to be admitted to testing every applicant MUST PROVIDE CURRENT PHOTO IDENTIFICATION, PROOF OF CURRENT Kansas or National EMT Certification and FF I – FF II (IFSAC) or Proboard. No exceptions will be made.
Pay Range: Grade 10F $13.89 -$20.13 per hour depending on qualifications.
Additional Starting Pay Incentives: 2% Associate’s Degree
4% Bachelor’s Degree
7% Master’s Degree
Hours: 24 Hour Shifts; 212 hours every 28 days/2756 hours per year.
Residency Requirements: Regular part-time and regular full-time employees shall, within one year of date of hire, establish and maintain residency within Franklin County or within a driving distance of 35 miles of the Ottawa City Hall, AND within the state of Kansas.
Additional Information:
High School Diploma or GED is required.
Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license and insurable by the City’s insurance carrier.
Must possess and maintain Kansas or National EMT certification and complete all other assigned trainings.

Summary
Duties of the Firefighter/EMT include protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, as well as providing EMS care where needed. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the supervising officer, but requires thorough individual understanding of firefighting methods and EMT duties.
Receive and respond quickly to all calls for service.
Extinguish fires and respond to hazardous material emergencies.
Remove persons from danger and provide appropriate medical care; complying with established medical
protocols.
Operate nozzles, hand fire extinguishers, hand tools, and other equipment as necessary to fight fires,
affect rescue, and provide emergency medical care.
Perform maintenance on department building, apparatus, and tools to ensure cleanliness and proper
working order.
Perform technical and specialty work in arson investigation, public education, building inspections, and
related functions as time and training permits.
Participate in formal and phase-intensive training and instruction sessions in firefighting methods, basic
life support, and other Fire Department activities.
Comply with all City ordinances and policies, as well as federal laws, state laws and ordinances.
Assist other departments and perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
High school diploma or equivalent.
EMT certification.
Firefighter 1 & 2 certification.
Some prior firefighting and/or emergency services experience preferred.
Ability to perform specialized firefighting and supervisory duties, respond to emergencies, render aid to citizens, and utilize all firefighting equipment with a degree of skill.
Ability to cooperate with others and to accept the lines of authority.
Considerable knowledge of the methods, principles, and practices of modern firefighting.
Thorough knowledge of the geographies of the City of Ottawa.
Ability to acquire knowledge of modern firefighting methods, hydraulics, fire ground techniques, first aid,
and related matters.
Ability to make technical and tactical decisions in high-priority situations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, City officials, business
entities, and the general public.
Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work under general supervision and make responsible decisions.
Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.
May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, extreme temperatures,
oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous
bodily fluids, or potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals.
May be required to wear a respirator.
Must meet the requirements of the City’s physical examination for firefighters.
Must be able to pass the bi-annually required physical agility tests administered by the department.
Must be able to talk, hear, feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with
hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, and operate mechanical equipment.
Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement and manual dexterity.
Must have precise hand-eye coordination, clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, and ability to
identify/distinguish colors.
Must be able to lift 100 or more pounds.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
