A Commuters Guide To JCCC
Whether you are from Lawrence, Overland Park, or Kansas City, most JCCC students spend a lot of time on the road. Here are five tips to stay prepared as a college commuter.
- Have an emergency bag. Keeping deodorant, lotion, chapstick, Band-Aids, menstrual products, and other commonly used products will be essential in feeling prepared for class.
- Keep a change of clothes nearby. You never know if you will spill on yourself or get stuck in the rain.
- Keep a pillow and blanket in your car. It gives you a comfortable option to take a nap between classes or during lunch.
- Chargers! It is very important that your devices are charged for class but if you forget, it will be a life saver if you have a charger for every device you bring to campus.
- BYO snacks and drinks. Although there are many vending machines on campus in case you forget, it is always better to have your favorites to keep you motivated throughout the day.

The Tale Of Vending Machine
Have you ever tried using the vending machine at JCCC? Boy, I have stories to tell you about them. I would recommend going to one if you’re hungry for a snack, but go at your own risk…
A young lad was going to the vending machine one day wanting Lay’s Chips. When he got there, they were out of Lay’s Chips. The poor lad had to get something else. While he got something else, he put money in the vending machine but never got his change back. That dang vending machine robbed him out of three quarters and his dreams of Lay’s Chips.
You do have other options if the vending machines are out. Like The Market at the Student Center here at JCCC, or The Hen House market across College Boulevard. The best part of these options is that you can get change back.

Whether you’re looking for your first job, an internship or a career after graduation, JCCC’s Career Development Center has resources to help you get started. And many are free for current students.
The Career Development Center,located on the second floor of the Student Center, is a good place to start. Career coaches can help you explore careers, develop your résumé, and prepare for interviews and job searches. You can make an appointment (through the Penji app), or just walk in.
Not sure what career fits you? The Discover Yourself page has assessments like FOCUS2Career, which can connect your interests, skills and values with possible careers.
When you have an idea of what you want, check out JobLinks. The free resource connects JCCC students and alumni with job and internship postings. You can create a profile, upload your résumé, and save searches for new opportunities.
The Career Development Center also offers career events and workshops, like resume and interviewing workshops, career fairs, and chances to meet employers.
