Rapid prototyping is a machine process that creates a model directly from computer drawings. The machine is also referred to as a 3D printer. It’s useful for making prototype models, which helps a designer see if the “flat” orthographic drawings will work in real life. Spools of plastic thread are inside cartridges, and they are what the model is made of. The large chess piece on the table in the photo was made with this machine.
