Welcome to the Crush the Vote Challenge!

Welcome to the Crush the Vote Challenge!

Here’s how it works. Engage with the 2020 elections this summer and earn prizes. Subscribe to this blog for opportunities to learn about and get involved with the elections. You can also follow along by joining the Canvas Course or following us on Instagram (@jccc_crush_the_vote).

Keep track of all your activities in the Crush the Vote Challenge log as you go. You can find that here: Crush the Vote Challenge Log. If you log six activities, you’ll get entered into the final chance drawing for some major prizes!

We also want to see how many students we can engage. If 5,000 students follow Crush the Vote on Instagram, then one lucky student will get to pie Trustee Greg Musil in the face!

Activities:

Learning Activities:

-Watching videos: Videos about voting  and election-related issues will be posted here and on Instagram. Keep track of which videos you watch and major takeaways as you go.

-Reading articles: Articles related to the election will also be posted here. Keep track of which ones you read and what you learned!

-Researching issues and candidates:

Choose one election (local or national) and pick two candidates from different parties to research. Check out the research tips below, and then respond to the prompt:

1. Jot down some questions. For example, what do you want to know about the candidates’ backgrounds? What issues are important to you?

2. Visit the candidates’ campaign webpages

3. Read news articles from varying sources

4. Watch videos of them speaking

Prompt: What did you find? Did anything surprise you?

-Attending election-relating events: We will send out info for virtual and/or in person event opportunities for you to join.

Action activities:

Creating videos, artwork, social media posts, articles, etc. to encourage other students to engage with the election (work individually or with a few friends or club on campus!)

-Volunteering as an election worker, for a local campaign, or for organizations that register people to vote (League of Women Voters, Loud Light, or When We All Vote).

-Organizing election-related events: Some examples might be getting together with friends to register students to vote or advocating for an issue that’s important to you.

-Candidate Letter

If you really want to get to know a candidate, or tell them how you feel about an issue, reach out to them yourself! Here are some tips:

-Introduce yourself as a student at JCCC (and a constituent if applicable). Tell them about yourself/why you’re writing.
-Research the candidate and their stances on issues that are important to you.
-State your views factually, but feel free to personalize.
-Stay positive and constructive, do not attack or make demands.
-Ask questions and be appreciative – thank them for their time.

Final Deadline: August 4th
