The Messenger Route: First Impressions Dinner, Birthday For Everyone, Veteran Peer Guidance, Dungeons & Dragons

Here’s Your Chance for a First Impression (Dinner)

Many people, especially college age, find it hard to network themselves in a professional and productive way. Luckily for us, JCCC is hosting a first impressions dinner hosted by a certified etiquette coach, Mary Jean Billingsley.

The dinner is Monday, Feb. 24 in RC 101C & D from 6-7:30 p.m. The deadline for registration is Monday, Feb. 17.

This dinner will help:

  • Introduce yourself: Learn how to clearly communicate who you are in the most captivating way.
  • Strike up a conversation: Help you try and get over the anxieties and show that it’s not as hard as you think.
  • Conduct business over meals: Teach you the balance between the casual scene of dinner and the corporate side of business.

Students who want to broaden those business skills should sign up today.

Contact Janae’ Wells at: (913)-469-8500, ext. 3635, if you have questions.

Feb. 19 is ‘Birthday for All’

Is it your birthday on Feb. 19? Well, it doesn’t matter because now it is. JCCC students have an opportunity to wake up and party on a Wednesday on the first floor of the Student Center.

College students know that day parties are the best, so it is a good thing this birthday bash is hosted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Maybe you have to wait another eleven months for your birthday, or maybe you are just looking for an excuse to take a break in between your classes. Both are extremely valid.

Okay, who doesn’t like free stuff? The Urban Institute stated that 70% of college students are in debt, so I know we JCCC students are all down for an opportunity to eat and party for free. Not only is there going to be free food at this event, but there is going to be free stuff. What that stuff is, is up to you to find out.

College is a time to make memories and have the best time of your life. So, work hard and play hard. These first few weeks this semester may have seemed like months. Everyone deserves a chance to make friends and relax. So, if it’s technically your special day or not, you can still celebrate at the ultimate birthday party.

Veteran Students Have Peers Waiting to Help

Students who are also veterans do not have to go through college alone.

The Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) is a peer support program for incoming student veterans on college campuses. The organization focuses on providing educational and vocational possibilities. At JCCC, PAVE seeks to create a welcoming environment that implements personal growth and career success.

PAVE’s ultimate goal is to serve those who serve the country. Veterans, do not miss your chance to connect with valuable resources and explore the available opportunities to veterans through JCCC.

There are multiple other event opportunities within the month of February to stay involved with JCCC’s veteran and military community. To get more information, stop by COM 305 to the Veteran & Military Student Resource Center for additional help.

Break Free for the Dungeons & Dragons Club

If you’re looking for fun activities to do on campus, check out the Dungeons and Dragons club. They host weekly meetings every Monday evening from 5:15-7 p.m. in OCB 100. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran, all experience levels are welcome.

Dungeons and Dragons is an interactive storytelling game, created by Ernest Gary Gygax and David Arneson in 1974, where the only limitation on what’s possible is the players’ imagination.

For beginners and the players who don’t have the time to fully commit to an entire campaign, the club has regular one-off sessions to help teach anyone who wants to learn how to play.

If you’re interested in other fun types of tabletop games, those are welcome in the club as well.

All students can join the discord and become a member of the Dungeons & Dragons community any time.
