Logan Grigsby never saw himself as the president of Student Senate, but, a couple years and a job opening later, he is fulfilling that role, serving JCCC and its community.

“At first I was only an online student, so then I decided, I want to come on campus and start getting into clubs, meeting people, and getting out of the house,” Grigsby said. “So, when I first joined the Senate, [I had] no idea I’d ever be president. Never for a second in the world thought I’d be president.”

But what does being the president of Student Senate entail?

“I meet with my exec team every Wednesday and we set the agenda, write the agenda, and I try to be the organizer and delegator,” Grigsby said. “I try to delegate the tasks out to everybody and then just work with everybody. I’m kind of more the public face of it.”

If a student has a concern, or a way they want to see campus improve, they can also inform the Student Senate, and Grigsby finds a way to run it up the administration ladder. He leads a general assembly meeting every Monday where they go over various points of action.

“A lot of things [we go over] will be budget requests when clubs and organizations want to come on campus,” Grigsby said. “We have a budget, I believe it’s $20,000 a year, to give out to clubs.”

Student Senate also plans for several events they put on throughout the year. According to the Student Senate website, they host Trick or Treat for Kids, JCCC Gives, and the Spring Dance.

Beyond budgeting and planning, the Student Senate is here to make JCCC the “best school it can be,” Grigsby said.

Whether it is trying to make halal food available in the cafeteria or being notified of handicap buttons that do not work, Logan Grigsby and the Student Senate are always looking for ways to improve JCCC.

“We definitely are always looking for ways to improve campus and figure out issues students are having,” Grigsby said.

Grigsby has been serving as the president of Student Senate since August of 2024. Before that he was a regular senator, then the vice chair of the treasury department.

“I have about a year and a half, getting close to two years’ experience on it, and I absolutely love it,” Grigsby said. “There’s nothing better than giving back to the community, and I’m very passionate about helping this school. This school has really helped me.”

If you are interested in running for the Student Senate, the application to do so comes out in March. Elections are in April. For more information about the Student Senate, click here.
