Despite a crushing loss to Florida State at Jacksonville in the Consolation final, the JCCC men’s basketball team had an amazing season. With an overall record of 31-6, and a conference record of 11-0, many players got to showcase their brilliance, but a couple stood out amongst the team. 

Sophomore guard Steven Samuels (3) was selected as Defensive Player of the Year this season. He made 40 steals and five blocks throughout the season. However, he gave JCCC the best of both worlds, ranking second on the team in scoring with 475 total points, also placing him at eighth in the conference. A performance worth mentioning is his 35-point game against KCKCC, leading them to a victory of 90-63. 

“Steve was outstanding at guarding fast guards with the ball,” Men’s Head basketball coach, Rand Chappell said. “His defense set the tone for our team and our team was near the top of a lot of defensive categories.” 

Another notable player is freshman guard Gavin Harvey (2), was recognized as this year’s Freshman Player of the Year, for his outstanding performance on the court. This season, he made JCCC history by putting up a rare triple-double in a victory against Hesston College. 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists: something that has been done only four times in the history of the program. He also ranked 14th in the NJCAA in assists (171), leading the conference in the process. 

“Gavin had a great year and really made our offense run,” Chappell said. “He can both score himself, but more importantly, he makes scoring easier for his teammates.” 

Although the season ended on a tough break, JCCC’s dominating presence on the court has raised the standard for the program. With young powerhouse players like Harvey, JCCC men’s basketball is sure to continue giving opponents a run for their money next season.
