Johnson County Community College students are discovering that intramural volleyball is more than just a sport— it’s a way to make friends, learn new skills, and enjoy stress-free competition.

Sunshine Pickering, a first-time participant, shared her experience with intramural volleyball. “I’ve never had the chance to join a team before, but this seemed like an easy way to get started,’’ she said. When asked about her favorite part of playing volleyball, Sunshine explained, “I like playing without the pressure of getting points or performing in front of a crowd.”

For Sunshine, volleyball has been a way to connect with others on campus. “I’m new here, but everyone seems really nice. It’s a good way to start a conversation with people.” She encourages fellow students to try volleyball, especially if they find it difficult to talk to people in class. “Sports are inviting. Nobody really judges here, and it’s a fun, easy way to meet people.” One of her favorite memories is playing beach volleyball with family and friends and seeing adults over 40 diving for the ball a moment she described as “cute and funny.”

Another student, Janish Patel, joined intramural volleyball through his work at the college’s activity department. “I work at the activity, and we host these events, so I get to play and have fun with students,” he said. Janish noted that volleyball offered him a chance to try something new. “I hadn’t played volleyball before, so learning a new skill and enjoying it is really important to me.”

Janish also highlighted the social benefits of intramural sports. “I already know two more people than I did yesterday. Sports make it easier to meet new friends and get introduced to new people.” He not only encourages other students to join volleyball, but also all intramural sports. “ It’s a great way to connect with others, and playing together makes friendship grow.”

Whether it’s the thrill of learning a new sport, the joy of casual competition, or the chance to make new friends, students like Sunshine and Janish are finding that intramural volleyball is about much more than just scoring points. It’s about building community, having fun, and making memories along the way.
