The Johnson County Community College Women’s basketball team continues to make its mark this season, remaining undefeated while displaying one of the most balanced and dangerous performances in the NJCAA.
The Cavaliers are averaging 91.9 points per game, a number that really reflects their pace, ball movement and depth across all five positions. Sophomore guard Mia Adams (25) said the team’s unselfish approach has been the foundation of their offensive success.
“I would say just moving the ball offensively, sharing the ball and having confidence with our teammates,’’ Adams said. “We all trust each other, and that makes everything flow.”
On the other side of the ball, the Cavs are just as imposing. They’re holding opponents to 48.6 points per game, a margin that demonstrates the emphasis the team places on discipline and defensive fundamentals. Sophomore guard Anonda Ford said the team’s defensive success is built on a daily reception and a commitment to making stops the priority.
“We work on it every day in practice; that’s our base,” Ford said. “We know defense is the most important thing for the whole team.’’
Ford added that the Cavaliers’ strength comes from how each player contributes something different on the floor.
“We’re all standouts each game because we all bring different attributes,’’ she said.
Adams highlighted one of those standouts: sophomore Layla Scott, last year’s team MVP and one of the Cavs’ most reliable shooters.
“From the arc, she shoots almost 100% most nights,’’ Adams said. “We trust her with the ball, she’s got the green light most of the time.’’
