Dr. Megan Doyle is an associate professor and lead faculty fellow for The Center of Teaching and Learning. She teaches in the college success department teaching college success strategies and the first-yearexperience course. Teaching students how learning works, how to read a textbook, and its uses. New and efficient ways for note taking, study habits and how to take exams.

“Being a professor in this area I view myself as a coach and being a cheerleader for students,” said Doyle.

In undergraduate school, she was involved on campus and really enjoyed being involved in student services. While she attended graduate school, she chose to work in housing, Greek Life, and academic advising. She really loves helping students transition to college in helpful ways. Her master’s degree is in higher education, and her doctorate is in teaching and learning. She started off by teaching first year seminar classes ingraduate school.

“Some students have never seen what higher education could do for them,” Doyle said.

Being a professor means helping students understand the importance of education. When we are educated, our whole society benefits from that.

She chose JCCC because it was closer to home and part-time, which allowed her to be at home more with her children when they were young. She chose it initially because of scheduling, but she chooses to stay because the mission aligns with her teaching philosophy.

“I help develop programming for faculty that help us learn new innovative teaching techniques, so if we have faculty that are constantly learning their craft of teaching then we are a better teacher in the classroom, and when you have better teachers, students are more likely to succeed,” said Doyle.

According to Doyles’ students and others around her, she is a good teacher and good at developing other teachers by co-leading new faculty orientation. New faculty go through a year-long program learning everything about JCCC.

“She is a very passionate teacher. She is very interested in the things she teaches,” said former student, Erin O’Connor.

When students are taught engagement strategies, they can grasp the concepts better connecting more to the learning.

“She is really great at engaging students in activities that make what they are doing a part of themselves which is really important.” said Valerie Mann, the department chair of College Success.

Teachers can set the tone for a good classroom environment which encourages students to engage more and look forward to class and increases punctuality.

“She played a large role in cultivating a comfortable but friendly, engaging classroom environment,” said O’Conner.

It is crucial for students to have someone they can go to at college that helps them feel like they belong.

“There are many students that will say Megan was their person who helped them figure out how to make it through, making her a valuable member of the team.”  said Mann.
