Editor in Chief Elizabeth Taylor.

I was at work when I first got the call from Mike Humprhey and was not able to answer, but when I called him back before I went home for the evening, I was offered the job. At that moment,  I never could have imagined where we would be now.

What started off as meetings in the quiet room of COM 260 has grown into a successful startup, with a staff of over 20 editors and reporters whose goal is to expand the world of student media at JCCC. We went from having no website, to a website with over 40 articles published because of the hard work of some special people.

Starting the journey as Editor In Chief of a publication that technically didn’t even exist yet was definitely a bit of a daunting task, but one I feel as though has gone off without (too many) hitches so far. Figuring out an organizational system and a sort of routine with the staff has been the biggest undertaking, and establishing that has been key to running a smooth operation so far. Additionally, getting to know the staff and reporters has been incredibly exciting, and a great joy.

We have editors and reporters doing everything; video production, writing, social media, photography, and podcast production. So, whatever your niche is, or even if you haven’t found it yet, we have something for you to try.

If YOU are interested in becoming a part of The Messenger, we are hosting a Student Media Open House on Feb. 28th where you can come see our space in COM 260, chat with our editorial board, and apply to be a part of something truly so exciting. We will have free swag, free food, and you can come and go as you’d like from 12:30 to 2:00 PM.

Tell your friends, classmates, and professors to come on by and see what student media at JCCC is all about!
