Kansas City Community Gardens – Volunteer Opportunity

The Kansas City Community Gardens aim to support schools in growing their own vegetable gardens that increase students’ access to healthy food, hands-on learning, and community building. They do this by providing new garden site consultations, low costs plants and seeds to schools, free workshops and training to teachers and other resources as needed. They need volunteers to help with these gardens! Volunteers can get matched with a schoolyard garden site and help students and teachers plant, water, weed, harvest, and maintain their schoolyard garden. See the flyer below for the two training sessions coming up!

Phoenix Family – Volunteer Opportunity!

Winter weather can make getting to the store for fresh fruits and vegetables a challenge for low-income seniors.

You can help bring fresh food to seniors right where they live. The best part of the day? When you get to see the faces of the seniors that you are were able help!

Volunteers help unbox fresh food and set up small markets right in seniors’ communities. Seniors choose produce to take home free of change and don’t have far to carry heavy grocery bags.

Check out dates and locations that work best for your busy schedule!

Johnson County Adult Education – Volunteer Opportunity!

Johnson County Community College’s Adult Education program helps people improve their reading, writing or math skills; earn their Kansas High School Diploma; or improve their English language skills.

Even though Johnson County is considered one of the more affluent and educationally thriving counties in the state, there are still more than 15% of residents who do not have a high school diploma, and eight percent do not speak English well.

This program relies on the help of volunteers to work one-on-one with or lead small groups of adult literacy or English language learning students. This takes place at any of the 5 JCAE centers across Johnson County. They ask that volunteers commit to volunteering three hours each week for a minimum of six months.

If you’re interested in making a difference right in your own backyard and assisting Johnson County Adult Education students, there is a volunteer orientation coming up:

Sunday, August 12th
1:30-4:30pm
Carlsen Center 232

You can register for that here!

If you have any questions, you can contact Jill Sigler via email or phone at 913-469-7677.

CLEAR Summer Volunteer Opportunities

The CLEAR Program at JCCC, which provides non-credit continuing education classes for adults with mild developmental disabilities or other cognitive disabilities, has an outstanding reputation for a great volunteer experience. Every student volunteer I’ve talked to has had wonderful things to say about helping out these students in and outside of the classroom.

While CLEAR isn’t offering classes this summer, they do have two events coming up that they could use volunteers for! Check them out:

CLEAR Red Carpet Afternoon
1:30–3 p.m.
Saturday, June 16, 2018

Dancing through the Decades
1:30–3 p.m.
Saturday, June 23, 2018

If you’re interested, contact Courtney Barden for more information.
