Veterans Community Project

The Veterans Community Project (VCP) is on a mission to eliminate Veteran homelessness by providing transitional-housing and enabling access to exceptional 360-degree service solutions. Focusing first on the Greater-Kansas City area, VCP aspires to use Kansas City as the blueprint for achieving similar successes in cities across the United States. VCP has a long-term goal of eliminating Veteran homelessness nationwide.

Through contributions and partnerships, they are creating Veterans Village — a community of transitional tiny-homes and onsite services to provide housing stability and address the underlying cause of the Veteran’s homelessness. This combination of housing stability and onsite services will lead to more successful permanent housing outcomes.

In contrast to traditional homeless services, a tiny-home provides the Veteran with privacy, a sense of security, and the ability to reintegrate at a comfortable pace. Veteran services are facilitated through an onsite community center that provides the Veterans with mentoring, case management, counseling, and linkage to other programs and services.

Pathways to Service

Good morning!

This past weekend I attended a Service Learning and Civic Engagement conference in Denver. While there, I attended a session on Pathways of Public Service and Community Engagement. The idea is that there are multiple ways to make a difference in the community through service, in fact, there are six ways:

1. Community Engaged Learning and Research: Connecting coursework and academic research to community-identified concerns to enrich knowledge and inform action on social issues.

2. Community Organizing and Activism: Involving, educating, and mobilizing individual or collective action to influence or persuade others.

3. Direct Service: Working to address the immediate needs of individuals or a community, often involving contact with the people or places being served.

4. Philanthropy: Donating or using private funds or charitable contributions from individuals or institutions to contribute to the public good.

5. Policy and Governance: Participating in political processes, policy making, and public governance.

6. Social Entrepreneurship and Corporate Social Responsibility: Using ethical business or private sector approaches to create or expand market-oriented responses to social or environmental problems.

If you’d like to find out which approach best fits you, you can take a brief survey. The purpose of this survey is to provide you with an opportunity to explore social issues that are important to you and different ways of addressing these issues.

Enjoy!

Amethyst Place

Amethyst Place provides safe and supportive housing to women recovering from addiction, which means providing housing to their children as well. They serve 50-60 families and over 100 children each year. A family who is accepted into the program receives 24 hour supervision, collaboration with community based case managers, as well as on-site therapy in a supervised drug-free environment. Each resident develops her own individualized treatment plan in conjunction with a treatment team made up of case managers, DSS workers, and therapists and must work, go to school or attend drug treatment at least 20 hours per week.

And of course, they need your help! Volunteers can help with a number of things like childcare, mentoring, tutoring, event planning, and decorating apartments. If you can’t volunteer, maybe you can donate! They always need laptops for college students as well as furniture and household items for apartments.

Something to think about as you’re rejuvenating and spring cleaning!

Where should I volunteer?

One thing I love about my job is getting asked, “where should I volunteer?” What a great question! So you’ve decided you want to help. You want to leave the world a better place then how you found it. You want to devote your time to a cause you care about. You want to make a difference. Now what?

Maybe I can help. Here are some questions I ask my students when they come to me with that very inquiry:

Where is a place you’d like to spend more time? Where would you rather be right now?

One of the major allures of volunteering is this idea that you’re devoting your time to help others. If you’re going to devote time to something, it might as well be in a place you want to be. So ask yourself, where is your happy place? Is it in the great outdoors? Check out environmental agencies like Bridging the Gap, Operation Wildlife, or the Heartland Conservation Alliance! Is it in the quiet solitude of a library or museum? See what’s near you, they always need volunteers as well!

Who do you want to help? Are there any causes you’re particularly concerned about, interested in, or want to learn more about?

Volunteering is your chance to act on issues you’re passionate about! Maybe you drive by that same corner every day where there’s always a homeless person. You’ve been wanting to help, but aren’t sure how. There are a plethora of agencies in the metro area that work directly with homeless populations, like Cross-Lines, UpLift, or even Nourish KC. Think of a population you want to serve. Are there any social issues you find yourself talking about a lot? Find something you care about, so that every time you leave you feel satisfied that you’re doing something about it instead of just talking about it.

Think of your passions and hobbies!

Not all of us are lucky enough to make a living off of our passions and hobbies, but there are a lot of volunteer opportunities that might align with your interests! Are you crafty? So many agencies that serve children or adults are looking for people to interact with kids through arts and crafts – like SAFEHOME or Lakeview Village for example. Are you interested in fashion? Try a thrift store like TurnStyles. Search for volunteer opportunities that you’ll ENJOY, something you’ll get excited about every time you go in.

What strengths do you have to offer? What do you envision yourself doing?

Every agency has several volunteer opportunities that encapsulate different skill sets. It makes sense to apply the skills of your every day life to volunteering, whether that means a similar position to your day job, or ways to apply your specific education. Or do you want to do something completely different? What do you envision when you picture yourself as a volunteer? Are you working with people? Are you working independently? We all have something different to offer, think about what you want to give of yourself.

Hopefully that gave you some ideas. Now do some research and get out there and act on that philanthropic urge! Or at least keep checking back to find the perfect fit for you 🙂

Happy volunteering!

Happy Bottoms Volunteering

DID YOU KNOW?

Safety-net programs such as SNAP (food stamps) and WIC (women infants children) do not cover diapers. This is a huge expense for low-income families costing an estimated $80-100 per month. 1 in 3 American families struggle to provide enough diapers to keep their babies happy, healthy and dry.

Without an adequate supply of diapers, babies spend extended periods of time in the same soiled diaper. This poses health risks to the baby, including diaper rash and potentially serious infections or even hepatitis. And being wet or dirty makes for an unhappy, crying baby, which causes family tension.

A 2013 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics found that moms who experience diaper need are twice as likely to suffer from depression and stress, because they struggle to meet their baby’s needs. The study found this stress ranks even higher than food insecurity.

At Happy Bottoms, their mission is to work with social service agency partners to provide diapers to low-income families while raising awareness of diaper need in our community. And guess what, they need your help!

Happy Bottoms has an online volunteer management system which makes it easy to give back. You create a profile, then can sign up for shifts online. Check it out here!

And of course, they always need volunteers. With so many different programs come many different opportunities for service.
