After the Harvest Volunteer Opportunities

After the Harvest » After the Harvest

After the Harvest works to reduce food waste by rescuing produce so it ends up on hungry families’ tables, instead of in a landfill or rotting in the field. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, growers and financial donors, After the Harvest  brings healthy fruits and vegetables, completely free of charge, to agencies feeding our hungry neighbors.

One way you can help is by bringing your family and friends, corporate co-workers and congregations, groups and organizations to glean (harvest what’s left over). Together, you’ll rescue fruits and vegetables from farms, orchards and gardens. Then, After the Harvest will deliver the produce fresh from the field—you can help do that too if you want!—to pantries, kitchens and shelters across the metro.

You can find more info here, as well as a calendar to sign up today!

Virtual Volunteering at the Smithsonian

Smithsonian Transcription CenterLooking for virtual volunteer opportunities you can do from the comfort of your home? Look no further than the Smithsonian!

The Smithsonian Transcription Center seeks to engage the public in making their collections more accessible. They work hand-in-hand with digital volunteers to transcribe historic documents and collections records to facilitate research and inspire learning in everyone.

Started in 2013, the Transcription Center is a website connecting volunteers around the world with Smithsonian collections. This crowdsourcing project was developed as a collaborative way to digitally enable and increase public engagement with Smithsonian materials, increase access and use of their digitized content, and create pathways of learning and new knowledge between the public and Smithsonian staff.

The Smithsonican Transcription Center | Crowdsourcing Document Transcription | CitizenScience.gov

In short–the Transcription Center is a place for you (and anyone in the world) to explore materials held within the Smithsonian and play a part in making those collections more accessible. They are actively seeking volunteers to join their community. With your help, we can make the vast collections in art, history, and science more accessible to anyone with a curious spirit, and truly create “One Smithsonian, Digital First.”
