Honors Student Experience

Champions Special Ministries serves persons with disabilities, their families, and the church through creative, engaging programs and day camps, and helps churches establish relevant ministries to those with special needs. Their Summer Day camp will be in July and they could use your help!

Volunteers will be a part of high-energy, high-FUN activities, including games, sports, dance, arts, crafts, Bible stories, worship, music, and themed parties. Check out the flyer below for more information:

ScrapsKC’s mission is to care for Kansas City’s environment, education and homeless through creative reuse. Their work transforms the environment, enhances learning and renews the homeless.

They are hosting their next Sip n Sort in hopes that you will help get their large collection of Spring and Easter items ready for the store floor! Meet on Thursday evening, March 5^th and dream of spring while sorting, organizing, packaging, pricing, and sipping! Think pastels, greens, flowers, bunnies, and of course – plastic eggs. Snacks, beer, and wine will be provided.

Interviews are scary! They are also a crucial part of getting any job offer. That’s why on Wednesday, February 12^th, Goodwill of Western Missouri & Eastern Kansas is hosting a mock interview day – an opportunity for job seekers to practice their interview skills, polish their answers, and get real feedback to improve.

Volunteers are needed to pose as Mock Interviewers. Two shifts are available: 9:00am-11:30am and 12:00pm-2:30pm. Goodwill will provide the questions, you provide the feedback.

Shepherd’s Center provides programs, leadership and advocacy to help both active and home-bound older adults live healthy, engaged and independent lives. One service they provide is delivering personal hygiene products and incontinence supplies to their clients in need.

Who: YOU! They welcome groups. This is a great opportunity for an individual or even a group of co-workers, friends to come in to help make a difference in older adult’s lives

What:

• Unloading items
• Sorting supplies/Packaging orders
• Delivering items and having client interaction (must have valid driver’s license, current insurance and able to pass a background screening)

When: The second Wednesday of each month, beginning February 12^th, 2020. Unloading, packing and sorting shift will take place from 10:00 am to approximately 2:00 pm dependent on volunteer task. Drivers will arrive at 1 pm. Most routes take 45 minutes to 1 hour.

For the first time in 50 years, the Kansas City Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl.  People across the metro are ready to grill out on a (surprisingly) sunny day. Wings, KC BBQ, pigs in a blanket, dips, chips, and hopefully at least a few vegetables will be devoured by fans in celebration of the big game.

It is no surprise that the Chiefs, who also give back to Kansas City through Play 60, Youth Football Outreach, Chiefs vs. Cancer, and the Chiefs Blood Drive, just to name a few, are also a sponsor to the Souper Bowl of Caring Hunger Relief Program.

Every year, during the week before the Super Bowl, the Chiefs Community Caring Team works with Harvesters to distribute over 100,000 meals. Make sure to pig out this Super Bowl, but don’t forget about those who might not have the same luxury. Click here and learn more to donate!

I received this email from Headquarters Counseling Center this week:

For over 50 years, Headquarters has provided suicide and crisis intervention services to Kansans and valuable volunteer opportunities to students and faculty. We are currently recruiting folks to participate in the upcoming trainings for volunteer crisis phone counselors who answer the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Come learn about becoming a Headquarters Volunteer Counselor by attending one of the upcoming information sessions.  You’ll learn about our training and training schedule, meet some HQ staff who will lead training, learn more about what we do at HQ, and get all of your questions answered.

There are opportunities coming up in February to volunteer with Green Works KC!

Green Works has been empowering Kansas City’s future leaders to care for our environment, contribute to our economy, and create healthy communities since 2007.

Next month, they need your help with resume writing lessons that equip students for future jobs and careers.

Resume Writing Lesson 1

• Tuesday, Feb 11 (arrive at 3:50 to 5 pm) – at the Green Works classroom
• Wednesday, Feb 12 (arrive at 2:45 to 3:45 pm) – at the class at Guadalupe High School

Resume Writing Lesson 2

• Tuesday, Feb 18 (arrive at 3:50 to 5 pm) – at the Green Works classroom
• Wednesday, Feb 19 (arrive at 2:45 to 3:45 pm) – at the class at Guadalupe High School

For both classes, volunteers will work one-on-one with two to three students helping them develop their resumes. They will provide you with information and tools to assist you as you work with the students.

The mission of Cross-Lines is to provide people in the Kansas City area affected by poverty with services and opportunities that encourage self-confidence, meet the needs of today, and provide tools for future self-sufficiency.

One need they currently have is for volunteers in their Community Kitchen. Here is more information:

COMMUNITY KITCHEN (Lunch)

• Objective: Serve lunch to around 200 people between 11:30AM and 1:00PM. Food prep and clean up included.
• Age minimum: 13
• Group size minimum: 6 people
• Group size maximum: 15 people
• Ideal group size: 8 people
• Time length: 10:00AM to 1:30PM (3.5 hours
• Scheduling: : Groups are scheduled on a Monday-Friday from 10:00AM to 1:30PM. There is no weekend availability for the Community Kitchen.

This email came across my desk today from Operation Breakthrough. Their mission is to provide a safe, loving and educational environment for children in poverty and to empower their families through advocacy, emergency aid and education.

Flexible Volunteer Opportunities:

The OB Network is our newest group of KC Professionals. It’s a fun, flexible way to get involved. Click here for information about joining The OB Network.

Since our launch last year, we have over 100 members who have raised over $18,000+ for Operation Breakthrough. Together, we can make a big impact. Membership begins at a minimum of $10/month.

As a member, you will receive various discounts at various OB Network events, stay in the know on our current donations needs, and have opportunities to volunteer. We also host an optional All-Member Meeting every 6-weeks at Operation Breakthrough. Become as involved as your schedule allows!

Grapevine meets on Wednesdays every 8 weeks over the lunch hour. Lunch is delicious and generously provided by The Planned Approach. During the meetings, the group connects on updates at OB, current needs, and future events. It’s an excellent way to get connected and to meet others who are passionate about our children and families!

AM Shift: 9AM-12PM

9AM-10AM: Facility Tour

10AM-12PM: Volunteer Project

3-5PM: Volunteer Project

Attire: Closed-toe shoes are required. Comfortable attire is best, as we may be cleaning, moving items, organizing donations, etc. and you may get a bit dusty and/or dirty.

**Projects and Volunteer Opportunities Available

Volunteer projects that can be accomplished by groups are essential for OB to keep running and growing — a group could make some huge strides for us in a short amount of time. Previous projects have recently varied from everything such as helping organize our warehouse, setting up our PreK Library, sanitizing cots/chairs/toys, painting our new therapy wing, leveling books for our Summer Reading Program, assembling computer carts for MakerCity, assisting our Donations Specialists when large donations come in to the Food Pantry/Clothing Closet, and more. Because of the ever evolving nature of our work, in addition to strict licensing standards, many times there are pressing projects that need to be accomplished outside of our classrooms. For groups, we will be able to share the project(s) that need to be accomplished within one week of the groups arrival.

Individual Volunteering Opportunities:

Volunteer Requirements:

There are two volunteer options to work with our children in our classrooms and/or our new MakerCity. All volunteers over the age of 18 working directly with our students are required to complete a background check ($15 fee) and TB skin test as well as attend an orientation. Volunteers 14-18 must attend an orientation and complete our volunteer application/agreement with a parent signature.

Upcoming Orientations:

Friday, January 3: 930AM-1130PM

Tuesday, January 14: 930AM-1130PM

Thursday, January 23: 530PM-7PM

Wednesday, January 29:  530PM-7PM

Volunteer Shifts:

Early Childhood Education Classroom Volunteer: (6 week-5 year old children)

Monday-Friday, either 9AM-12PM OR 3-530PM

*Must commit to 12-weeks of volunteering. Must choose a consistent day to volunteer in the same classroom (ex: every Monday AM in Green 1 Classroom).

*Must be 14 years or older to volunteer

MakerCity Volunteer: (6-14 year old children)

Monday-Friday, 4:00PM-5:30PM

*Must be 16 years or older to volunteer

*Must commit to 2X/month volunteer shifts

Goodwill empowers people to discover their potential and adapt for the future through the power of work. Retail stores provide jobs and funds for local workforce development services. For 125 years, Goodwill has provided services in and around Greater Kansas City.

The last week of the year is always the busiest. Goodwill stores need volunteers to help accept and sort donations at high traffic Goodwill locations.

They need support on these days:
