In August, Susan Ferguson, adjunct assistant professor of English, received an Inspiration Grant from the Kansas City Regional Arts Council for her fiber art to help prepare for an exhibit of her tapestry weaving at the Leedy-Voulkos Arts Center, 2012 Baltimore Ave., Kansas City, MO. According to the grant announcement, Ferguson will “weave a collection of works that focus on contemporary environmental concerns.” She “will use traditional, non-traditional and natural materials in her abstract tapestries, such as yarn, twine, copper pipe, wire, plastic bags and bottles, recycled clothing, and discarded auto parts.”
In addition, Ferguson has a weaving exhibit on display at the Liberty Community Center Gallery, 1600 S. Withers Road, Liberty, MO, through Nov. 25. This exhibit features six clothing-shaped pieces created by Susan during treatment for breast cancer. The pieces are collectively called the “Hot Mess Collection.”
Another exhibit that will feature some of Ferguson’s work will open on Nov. 1. “Reflections of Nature,” an exhibition of works by members of the Kansas City Fiber Artists, will run Nov. 1-Dec. 28, 2018, at the Anita Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost, Kansas City, MO. A “Meet the Artists” event is scheduled for Dec. 1.
