Jones Offers Writing Workshop for Veterans

Nathan Jones, professor of English, is offering a free writing workshop for veterans from 3-6pm on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the CoLab (OCB 107).  The workshop will be collaborative.  Participants will also discuss ideas for potential publication.  Food and drinks will be served.  This workshop is co-hosted by the JCCC Kansas Studies Institute and the Veteran and Military Student Resource Center.

Ted Rollins on Transfer

Ted Rollins, professor of English, will give a presentation titled, “How Can We Promote the Transfer of Learning by Our Students across Contexts?” at 1pm, Friday, Nov. 9 in the CoLab.  Rollins will discuss the extent to which students can “transfer” or apply their writing knowledge and skills from one context (such as a composition course) to another (such as a course in their major or a writing project for their profession).  He will also cover pedagogical strategies to help students make important connections as writers.

Alexander Hosts Celebration of Frankenstein

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Danny Alexander, professor of English, will give a presentation and host discussions on the novel on Oct. 24, 2018 at Our Daily Nada bookstore, 304 Delaware Street, Kansas City, MO.

Fitzpatrick presents at TYCA Midwest

Maureen Fitzpatrick, professor of English, presented “The Edge of Future Literacies” at the 2018 TYCA Midwest Conference, Oct. 11-13, in Indianapolis. Fitzpatrick’s interactive presentation focused on different definitions and categories of literacy, including digital literacy, universal literacy, creative literacy, and literacy across disciplines.  Participants discussed changing expectations of literacy since the introduction of the Internet and favorite digital tools to use in the classroom.

Fitzpatrick has also recently become the Kansas Representative for TYCA.
