Professor Jones Kicks off the ’24-25 Great Books Series

Can you name a great Philippine novel or novelist? Since the answer to that is probably ‘no,’ Nathan Jones remedied our lack of knowledge by sharing an introduction to José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere (Do not touch me), possibly the most celebrated novel in the history of the Philippines.

The presentation provided an overview of the characters and plot points of the book. It also detailed the historical context–the closing years of Spanish colonial dominance in the Philippines–and the power dynamics that made the book resonate strongly with the independence movement in that nation both during Spanish and American rule.

We’ll insert the video here when it is published.
