The midterms are coming up, and students can register to vote until Oct. 13 in Kansas and Oct. 7 in Missouri. Some students at JCCC think that it is very important to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.  

 “I always try to vote in every election that I can,” said Jordan Dorsey, who is studying general studies. “Especially local elections because I think that is where our voices are most heard. I think it’s very important for young people to get involved in their local elections.” 

Dorsey also works with Loud Light, a group aiming to get young adults registered to vote. Loud Light is often tabling around campus. 

 “I had the pleasure of working with Loud Light, and they have educated me on different things that are going to be on the ballot,” Dorsey said. “It only takes about two minutes to register to vote.” 

If you’re interested in registering to vote, start by going to the Secretary of State of Kansas or Missouri, depending on where you live and follow the steps provided on the website. For some students, voting has already become a habit. 

“Well, it’s a civic duty to vote, so I vote in whatever election I’m able to vote in. Because, again, that’s how you get a democracy. You have to have people who vote, and people actually go out and do that civic duty, or else, you know, you don’t have much of a democracy otherwise,” said Colin Fiscus, who is studying psychology. 

For other students who have not voted or registered yet, what would make them take a chance? 

“I guess what everybody wants is for everybody to be happy,” said Kaia Holdenberg, a student who is studying liberal arts.
