The first week of school Student Life held activities for students to participate in. One of those events was the ice cream social. Student Life representative Kynleigh Smith said the purpose of the Ice Cream Social was, “So students can learn about the Academic Resource Center, get more involved and make friends,”.
The Academic Resource Center is a center on the first floor of the library where students can get help in many different subjects. There is a science, writing, math, reading and language resource center. There is also the Academic Achievement Center where students can get tutors.
On August 31st there will be another event to help students get to know more about each other and the college. This event is called Cav Kickoff which is, “A longstanding tradition for JCCC students,” according to Manager of Student Activities Cassie Jordan.
Cav Kickoff has many different things. It has most of the clubs that are on campus, it has over 35 colleges from across the Midwest to give students information and over 40 different academic departments to help those who have yet to declare a major narrow down their choices.
There are many different activities going on at Cav Kickoff, both on and off the field. Students will be able to learn about different colleges, The National Guard, the clubs and activities on campus and all of the campus’ resources. They will also be to play volleyball and use a rock-climbing wall provided by The National Guard in The Fountain Square. A DJ, caricatures, face painting and airbrush tattoos will be there as well.
The National Guard will have more than just their rock-climbing wall. They will be there with more information about their programs too. Finally, there will also be giveaways of Royals tickets, walking tacos and JCCC merchandise.
In Jordan’s opinion all these activities are great, but they are not the most important reason to go. “One of the biggest reasons to go is because it makes a great college memory. There is so much energy there even though it is a lot of information. It feels like JCCC is coming together as a community to celebrate the start of the fall semester.”
JCCC is a community college, so we do not have dorms or student halls. Some students believe that it is harder to connect with others because of that. That is why, “You never know where playing volleyball or games will lead. Put yourself out there and make friends and talk to tables”.
Cav Kickoff will be held in the Com Plaza and the Fountain Square. If there is rain on the original date of August 31st then it will be pushed back to September 1st.
