Werkmeister’s StevesofGrass

Steve Werkmeister, professor of English, recently hit a milestone with his literary blog, StevesofGrass.  Over the summer, Werkmeister’s blog surpassed 10,000 visitors during the past five years.  Werkmeister reports that 10,000 views is not a lot in “Kardashian terms,” but it’s kind of a big deal for a blog that’s mostly about literature.   If you’re unfamiliar with StevesofGrass, you should know that it’s your go-to place for analysis and insight on a variety of literary works, themes, and characters.  Postings range from an overview of the Wife of Bath’s Prologue to an analysis of grace and justice in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”

Dave Davis to Co-Host Film

Dave Davis, professor of English, and Doug Patterson, professor of astronomy, will co-host the film Patema Inverted at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Polsky Theatre.  Patema Inverted, originally released in 2013, is a Japanese animated film set in the distant future when a scientific experiment causes gravity to reverse, resulting in most people and things to start floating away from Earth. Some people remain on Earth by living in tunnels underground.  Because of the lack of gravity, however, they walk on the ceilings of the tunnels.  Patema is a teenage girl who lives in the tunnels with other “Inverts.”   The film focuses on the relationship she develops with Age, a boy living on the surface world who is affected by gravity in the opposite way that Petema is. Patema Inverted is part of JCCC’s 50th anniversary film series.
