On Success

Just finished conferences this week.  I can’t stress enough how important it is for students to drop by their teacher’s office if they want help.  In College A students go to their teachers office, though in high school maybe only the “bad” students to to the teacher’s office.

Despite scheduling conferences during class time, several students have failed to come see me.  Generally these are the students who most need my help.   Much of the reason we sacrifice class time for a conference is because students tell me they can’t come to my office because the don’t have time.  Work, other classes, kids or whatever won’t allow them to make use of office hours.  When those people blow off appointments scheduled during class time, it seems clear I’m hearing excuses and that success in class is not a priority to them.  Perhaps students expect something even more convenient?

This has lead me to tweet:

Success is rarely convenient.  Failure often is.
