 What is the purpose of the HCIS Internship course?

It is designed to provide students with an opportunity for meaningful engagement working side by side with some of the most talented professionals within the robust Kansas City health IT community and healthcare industry.

What are the benefits?

As an intern, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Gain insight into the professional health IT field
  • Acquire practical experience and knowledge of healthcare IT & information systems
  • Develop professional networking and communications skills
  • Expand your HCIS résumé
  • Earn HCIS references from your host site

Is this a paid internship?

No. The HCIS Internship is an academic, 2-credit-hour HCIS course.

 What are the start and end dates for the on-site, virtual or hybrid internship experience?

  • Fall semester internship experiences start the fourth week of September and run through November
  • Spring semester internship experiences start the fourth week of February and run through April

Specific start and end dates are determined: 1) by completion of the required immunization documentation, background check and drug screen; and 2) individually by the applicant and the internship host.

What is the time commitment?

Forty hours is a minimum; 60 hours is the maximum. The average internship length is 55 hours.

Where are these internship opportunities located?

Internships are available at local Federally Qualified Health Centers, specialty clinics, and healthcare systems such as:

  • University of Kansas Health Systems
  • Vibrant Health
  • Saint Luke’s Health System

It is also possible to have a remote internship.

What are common internship roles?

What do HCIS interns actually do?

Internships consist of a combination of observational experiences and project work. The responsibilities involved will depend on the individual internship host site.

What are the Internship Expectations:

HCIS interns are expected to be professional and work just as hard as if the internship were an actual paid work position. Specific expectations include:

  1. Consistent professionalism: dress appropriately and maintain a polite, positive and motivated attitude
  2. Reliable and punctual attendance
  3. A thoughtful, inquisitive approach: be present, engaged and ask good questions
  4. Conscientious completion of all assigned tasks

Is there a minimum GPA to participate in this program?

No.
