2019-2020 Great Books Series

Michael Carriger, assistant professor of English, and Maureen Fitzpatrick, professor of English, have announced this year’s line-up of presenters in the Great Books series:

  • Jay Antle, Lord of the Rings, Sept. 4, 2019
  • Dave Davis, Dracula, Oct. 2, 2019
  • Andrea Vieux, Salvage the Bones, Nov. 6, 2019
  • Patrick Lafferty, Fahrenheit 451, Feb. 5, 2020
  • Farrell Jenab Hoy, A House for Mr. Biswas, March 4, 2020
  • Luz Alvarez, One Hundred Years of Solitude, April 1, 2020

Each presentation takes place at noon in the Co-Lab.  Typically, presentations last 30-45 minutes, with some time for questions and discussion afterward.

Dave Davis to Co-Host Film

Dave Davis, professor of English, and Doug Patterson, professor of astronomy, will co-host the film Patema Inverted at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Polsky Theatre.  Patema Inverted, originally released in 2013, is a Japanese animated film set in the distant future when a scientific experiment causes gravity to reverse, resulting in most people and things to start floating away from Earth. Some people remain on Earth by living in tunnels underground.  Because of the lack of gravity, however, they walk on the ceilings of the tunnels.  Patema is a teenage girl who lives in the tunnels with other “Inverts.”   The film focuses on the relationship she develops with Age, a boy living on the surface world who is affected by gravity in the opposite way that Petema is. Patema Inverted is part of JCCC’s 50th anniversary film series.

Hodgkin is President of Local Reciprocity for PEO

Janice Hodgkin, adjunct professor of English, is now the President of Johnson/Wyandotte Counties’ Reciprocity for P.E.O. for the year 2019/2020.  This year P.E.O. International is celebrating its 150th year.  Hodgkin will attend the 150th year celebration in Iowa in September.   In Johnson/Wyandotte County there are 35 chapters; each chapter averages 25 to 50 women.  P.E.O. currently has seven international projects and two local Kansas projects, all which involve raising money to help women achieve degrees in higher education.

Bennett Gives Two Presentations

On April 6, 2019, Sally Bennett, adjunct professor of English, gave two 90-minute presentations to site volunteer and staff at the Fort Atkinson Historic State Park in Fort Calhoun, NE.  Her presentations were titled “Women of the Early American Republic, a Historical Background for Women in Fort Atkinson” and “Who Am I, Creating Your Unique Early 19th Century Role.”   These presentations were preparation training for the site’s Bicentennial events coming in August 2019.

Pace to Attend National Conference

Amy Pace, adjunct professor of English, will attend the Global MindED Conference from June 7-9 in Denver.  Global MindED’s mission is “to help First Generation and underrepresented college students achieve career success by providing them with professional skills, resources, networks, mentors, experiential learning and social support.”
