• News from the E/J Division Election Committee: Update

faculty senate logo

Congratulations to Lori Paldino, who has been elected as the adjunct faculty representative for the E/J Division.

A message from Lorie:
I am excited to serve as the adjunct representative of the English/Journalism Division. I enjoy my involvement in the department, serving as the chairperson for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks as the Common Read choice for 2012-2013. Even though I have handed the scepter to Maureen Fitzpatrick for Behind the Beautiful Forevers, I will remain involved with the committee. We continue to hone our expertise at hosting events and providing support for classroom instruction. Personally, I feel strongly that the inclusion of a Common Read choice has enlivened the experience of my composition students. I am also continuing my involvement as the facilitator for Safe Space training at the college. Safe Space training is now under the Staff Development umbrella, so we are working to understand how that change impacts our own organizational structure. Hopefully, you will see opportunities for Safe Space training in the near future. Becoming a member of the Faculty Senate will complement each of these experiences. I will do my best to represent both the adjuncts and the department well. Thank you for electing me.

Andrea Broomfield’s Latest British Cookbook Review

Anyone for Dinner with the Queen?  Read on, and See. . . .
Dinner at Buckingham Palace by Charles Oliver.  Edited and compiled by Paul Fishman and Fiorella Busoni (2007)

dinner at buckingham

I have not made anything from Charles Oliver’s Dinner at Buckingham Palace.  Many recipes are overwhelmingly fussy, and even if they are not fussy, the ingredients are either too expensive or too difficult to obtain:   consommé with fumet of duck, leverets, and fresh turtles, truffles, and other such ingredients appear frequently.   Of course, that’s part of what it means to eat like a royal, so the cost, scarcity of ingredients, and fuss are in order.  However, what I do find surprising is how boring so many of the recipes are!  Take as an example Chicken Panada, where a perfectly acceptable young fowl is roasted, but then its white meat is pounded with bread crumbs soaked in broth, then diluted with a bit more broth.  The whole mess is then pushed through a tammy (or food mill), and served “moderately warmed in custard cups.”  Although listed in among such delights as Ceylon Moss Gelatinous Chicken Broth and Macaroni Soup a la Royale, Chicken Panada belongs in the sick room of a Victorian mansion (and woe to the poor invalid stuck with it).
Which perhaps brings us to the point of this particular cookbook:  it is a treasure trove of recipes that indicate how little British Royal tastes have apparently changed, and as such, it is an essential scholarly reference work for a British food historian.
So here, then, are some of my scholarly musings.
Charles Oliver was the son of a royal servant and who likewise became a servant, working for the royal household all of his life, except during World War One.  Those familiar with Downton Abbey, or Remains of the Day will likely understand such loyalty to one’s lord and Queen.   Young Charlie’s passion was food, and although his injuries from the Great War never allowed him to become a royal chef, he nonetheless spent time in the kitchens and kept detailed notes on what was prepared.  After many years, he amassed a collection of recipes and menus, as well as various anecdotes that related to the workings of the kitchen and the Royals at their meals.  He wished that after his death, his material be compiled into what he described as “a cookbook with a difference” (xiv).  Oliver died in 1965, and half a century later, his wish came true. Read More

• Kansas Writers Symposium

kansas studies

This year’s JCCC Kansas Writers Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 13, in the Regnier Center. Sponsored by the Kansas Studies Institute, this is part of an ongoing series of efforts to promote education about the art, history, environment, cultures, and literature of Kansas. This year’s theme is “The Native Presence in Kansas Literature.” Denise Low, former Kansas Poet Laureate, will be the keynote speaker. Unlike previous years when invited authors from the humanities, social sciences, and even journalism discussed the topic of Kansas as a place and idea, this year’s symposium will be focused on a more narrow dialogue among writers whose primary work has been in fiction and poetry. Participants will include, in addition to Denise Low, Linda Rodriguez, Lisa Mann, Joshua Falleaf, Stephanie Fitzgerald, DaMaris Hill, Lisa Tatonetti, Jim Hoy, Kevin Rabas, Raylene Hinz-Penner, Pamela Dawes Dambornino, Roy Bird, and Xanath Caraza. The organizers of the event include Jim Leiker, director of the Kansas Studies Institute; Ann Rubeck; and English faculty members Sam Bell, Dave Davis, Tom Reynolds, and Farrell Jenab.

 • League for Innovation Literary Competition Deadline is April 1

Literatary Competition Entry Form
Literary Competition Flier

infinitex300opt

The League for Innovation in the Community College is sponsoring its annual student literary competition. Each League board member conducts its own competition, for which students submit work in four categories: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and one-act play. The work of the local winners will be forwarded to the national competition to be judged by nationally-known writers in each category. The winners of the national competition are then published in a journal.
The JCCC competition is now underway, and as mentioned above, we are accepting submissions in four categories: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and one-act play. The deadline is April 1, 2013. Entry forms are available at the Writing Center, on the E/J Division office bulletin board, and at GEB 165H.Submissions and completed entry forms can be placed in my mailbox or dropped off at my office (GEB 165H).  Several reminders will be sent before the April 1 deadline.
Last year, two JCCC students were recognized in the national competition: Kevin L. Earls won first place in the non-fiction category for his essay “White Lies, Brown Stains, and Honesty,” and Jane Blakeley received honorable mention in the poetry category for her poem “The Waltz.”
Please encourage your students to enter.
