JCCC Model united Nations team Received Awards at the
2008 National Model United Nations conference
New York City.

 

The Johnson County Community College Model United Nations Team won three awards at the National Model United Nations conference in New York City March 18-22, 2008. JCCC received two outstanding awards for their portrayal of Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The Outstanding Delegation award is the most prestigious award for Model United Nations in the world. The Outstanding Delegation award recognizes the overall performance of JCCC across all committees. Students are evaluated on their skills at: (a) representing the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s policy position; (b) JCCC student performance in formal and informal speaking and (c) proper use with rules of procedure. JCCC was the only Community College among the short list of other schools that received the award. The award list included Alma College, Brigham Young University, Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris France, Ludwig-Maximillians-University Munich Germany, University of Montréal, Macalister College, California State University Northridge, California State University Chico, Rider University, University of Miami, University of Laval, Florida International University and Johnson County Community College. JCCC also received an Outstanding Position Papers award for representing the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Again JCCC was the only community college to receive this position paper award among a short list of other colleges and Universities. This award is received in recognition of outstanding pre-conference preparation. In addition, JCCC in combination with Wichita State won an Honorable Mention award for representing the Philippines. According to JCCC team member Trent Brining, “The National conference allowed me the opportunity to interact with students from around the world. The quality of the students in New York was truly remarkable.” Viktoryia Schnose said that “after the conference professors from other colleges asked me how and why the JCCC team did so well. This is because my fellow JCCC team members were outstanding since they quickly gained the respect of other students by being knowledgeable, friendly and respectful.” “The intensity of the effort by JCCC and other schools was extraordinary. I particularly enjoyed the diversity of the experience via the interactions with other students from around the world,” said Lowell Fletcher. Sixteen JCCC students competed with students from over 200 other Universities and Colleges from across the world. The students who represented Lao Peoples Democratic republic are Jason Beury (Lawrence, KS), Trent Brining (Overland Park, KS), team captain Jared Hedge (Atwood, KS), team co-captain Nida Fatima (Overland Park, KS), Stephanie Goings and Viktoryia Schnose. The Outstanding Delegation award was for these students representing Laos’s policy positions on the following topics: Breaking the Link Between Diamonds and Armed Conflict; The Role of Private Military and Security Companies in Conflict; The Politics and Economics of the External Debt Crisis; The Evaluation and Implementation of the United Nations Literacy Decade. Students who represented the Philippines are Stephanie Richner (Overland Park, KS), team co-captain Brandy Schmitz (Olathe, KS), Lowell Fletcher (Kansas City, MO), Haena Kahng (Lawrence, KS), Norman Decelles (Lawrence, KS), Danny Eakins (Stilwell, KS), Lois Grimshaw (Olathe KS). The Honorable Mention award was for these students representing Philippines policy positions on the following topics: Global Management of Water and Other resources; Reversing the “Urban Penalty:” Empowering Vulnerable Urban Populations; Implementation and Strengthening of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In addition, three JCCC team members received coveted staff positions for the National Model United Nations conference. Brandon Bezner (Overland Park, KS) was the Chair of the General Assembly Second Committee: Economic and Financial, David Willis (Cleveland, MO) was chair of the International Atomic Energy Agency. This opportunity helps these students to build their skills in facilitation of debate, rules of order, and conflict resolution.

2008 Mid-West Model United Nations conference St. Louis MO.

 

The JCCC Model United Nations team received three Outstanding Delegation awards for its portrayal of Cuba and Peru at the 2008 Mid-West Model United Nations Conference St. Louis February 13-16, 2008. This accomplishment is attributable to the team’s head delegate Trent Brining (Overland Park, KS) for his work representing Cuba’s policy positions before the Economic and Social Council (ESOSOC). The issues before ESOSOC included the “Information and Communication Technologies and Development, Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, and Promoting access to freshwater.”In addition, the team won two Honorable Mention awards. An Honorable Mention award went to team captain Jared Hedge (Atwood, KS) for his portrayal of Peru’s policy position on the Security Council regarding “The situation in Afghanistan” The second Honorable Mention award went to Jason Beury (Lawrence, KS) for his portrayal of Cuba’s policy position on the “Implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and on their destruction.”One of only two community colleges, twelve JCCC students competed with students from over 100 other Universities and Colleges from across North America (for example, DePaul University, Univ. of Illinois, Univ. of Missouri, Univ. of Nebraska, Univ. of Wisconsin). Besides, Jason Beury, Trent Brining, Jared Hedge, the JCCC teams success is attributed to team co-captain Norman DeCelles (Lawrence, KS), Danny Eakins (Stilwell, KS), Nida Fatima (Overland Park, KS), Lois Grimshaw (Olathe KS), Haena Kahng (Lawrence, KS), Kelly Parry (Olathe, KS), Jamie Mills (Leavenworth, KS), team co-captain Brandy Schmitz (Olathe, KS). In addition, JCCC team members worked as staff for the Mid-West Model United Nations conference. Brandon Bezner (Overland Park, KS) was the Chair of the General Assembly Second Committee: Economic and Financial, and Brian White (Lenexa, KS) was co-chair of the Human Rights Council. These Mid-West Model United Nations conference awards cap over two years of success for JCCC, during which the team has won awards at all of the last nine conferences they have attended. The JCCC Model United Nations team recently dedicated the JCCC Model U.N. honors wall and received a one-time Special Recognition award for its outstanding performance during the last academic year presented by the United Nations Association, Greater Kansas City Chapter, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City on October 24, 2007. The JCCC Model UN team will next attend the National Model United Nations and Leadership Conference in New York held at the United Nations March 16-21, 2008 where they will represent the country of Laos. In addition, JCCC and Wichita State University (WSU) will be representing the Philippines in New York as part of a combined delegation. This conference is an exceptional educational opportunity for JCCC students and a chance to highlight the school’s academic excellence.

The Johnson County Community College (JCCC) Model United Nations team is pleased to announce receiving an Outstanding Delegation Award for its portrayal of New Zealand at the American Model United Nations International Conference (AMUN) in Chicago IL. Nov 17-20, 2007. In addition, the team also received Certificates of Accomplishments for representing both the countries of New Zealand and the Ukraine. 

Sixteen JCCC students competed with other colleges and universities from across North America. In particular Jared Hedge (from Atwood KS) played a key roll in the team’s success. Jared represented New Zealand on the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and received exceptional scores for global dialogue, diplomacy and multilateral negotiations. Jared received these top scores representing New Zealand position on the following topics: Topic 1: Poverty and Development: Housing for the Urban Poor, Topic 2: Environment and Sustainable Development: Water Conservation 

In addition to Jared, the team was lead by Jenn Edmonds (team President) Gardner KS, Norman Decelles team Executive Vice President from Lawrence KS, Brandy Schmitz team Vice President of Model United Nations from Olathe KS, Sara Ash from Overland Park KS (formerly Pea Ridge AR), Calvin Baumgarten from Kansas City KS, Amy Pepper Cheney KS, Jerome Berndt Berlin Germany, Viktoryia Schnose resides Lenexa KS (formerly from Minsk Belarus), Stephanie Goings from Lawrence KS, Brian White from Lenexa KS, Joe DeNoon Gardner KS, Trent Brining, Overland Park KS, Nida Fatima Overland Park KS, Lois Grimshaw Olathe KS, Wesley Barnes Lawrence KS, The team advisor is Dr. Brian Wright of JCCC (resides in Warrensburg MO).  

 

Johnson County Community College Received Award National Model United Nations Conference in Washington DC November 4, 2007

 

The Johnson County Community College (JCCC) Model United Nations team is pleased to announce that it received an Honorable Mention Award for their portrayal of the Ukraine at the National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN DC) in Washington DC, November 1-4, 2007. Twelve JCCC students competed with other colleges and universities from across North America, Europe, and Asia. “It was a wonderful learning experience and I look forward to continuing to improve over the next year,” said JCCC student Norman Decelles, of Lawrence , KS. In addition to Mr. Decelles team Vice President, the JCCC team members are: Jean Edmonds (team President) from Gardner KS, from Lawrence KS, Brandy Schmitz Olathe KS (team Vice President), Calvin Baumgarten from Kansas City KS, Amy Pepper Cheney KS, Jerome Berndt Berlin Germany, Viktoryia Schnose Overland Park KS, Mick Larson Overland Park KS, Stephanie Goings from Lawrence KS, Brian White from Lenexa KS, Joe DeNoon Gardner KS. The team advisor is Dr. Brian Wright of JCCC. This NMUN DC is award caps two years of success for JCCC, during which the team has won awards at the last six conferences they have attended. The JCCC Model United Nations team recently dedicated of the JCCC Model U.N. honors wall and received a one-time Special Recognition award for its outstanding performance during the last academic year presented by the United Nations Association, Greater Kansas City Chapter, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City on October 24, 2007.
