On the last Wednesday of April, individuals are encouraged worldwide to wear denim. But why denim, you may be asking? 

Denim Day began in Italy in the 1990s to support survivors of sexual assault. The idea of the day was created after the verdict of a rape case was overturned due to the victim’s jeans, so the women of the Italian parliament wore denim to support the survivor, and all survivors of sexual assault. In observance of Denim Day, JCCC’s SART & DART team will be hosting an event on April 22, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., in the COM Plaza. 

“We’ll have a tailgate tent. We have a photo booth opportunity where people can take photos with jeans. They also have some goodies and giveaways,” Mo Rammel, Coordinator of Student Life, said. 

They will also have a whiteboard with written messages and resources for if students are ever in that situation.

“[Printing services] made us some awesome pairs of jeans out of foam board, and they’re going to be like yard signs that say Denim Day, so they’ll be on the hill for the whole week,” Rammel said. 

To show support, be sure to wear Denim on April 22, on JCCC’s Denim Day. 

“I hope people can stop by and learn a little bit more about how to prevent sexual assault and how to stand up for survivors,” Anne Turney, Director of Student Life, said.
