The Johnson County Community College softball team shut down Independence in their regular-season finale on Saturday, May 2. They secured the program’s fourth conference championship in the past six seasons and their 19th overall in the program.

According to the JCCC Athletics page, “the Cavaliers rolled to a 13-0 victory in the opener before erupting for a 23-4 win in the nightcap to clinch the title in emphatic fashion.”

The Cavaliers set out to win, only allowing one hit in the five-inning run-rule victory.

If game one was a shutdown, game two was even more impressive.

“The Cavaliers exploded for 17 runs in the first inning and never eased up,” according to the athletics page. They finished with 23 runs in 23 hits to complete the win.

Katie Kolarik delivered the biggest swing of the day, hitting a grand slam and a three-run homer in the first inning. Makenzie Yoder also hit a grand slam and brought in six runs.

With these big wins, the Cavaliers won the conference championship and secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Region Six Tournament.

They will begin post-season Wednesday, May 6, hoping to keep their winning streak as they begin the next stages of the championship.
