On Thursday nights, JCCC’s lower gym turns into a battlefield–it’s not a battle for scholarships or trophies, but for bragging rights. Although it only happens once a week, there is no shortage of heavy competition. JCCC intramural basketball has its own unique kind of chemistry, one that not even organized sports can replicate. How do intramural sports work, and how do teams come together?
“Honestly, we just met on the spot. We just got put into a team, and after a couple games, we just kind of meshed together,” says Michael Prewitt, Liberal Arts major at JCCC.
The idea of intramural sports is to have a place where those looking for some friendly competition can come together and have a good time, de-stress and meet new people. Nothing washes away stress like the swish of a 3-pointer, especially for busy students. Although intramural sports are generally centered around fun, students still like to be competitive.
“We are having fun, but obviously we’re here to win. At the end of the day, it’s still competition,” says Prewitt.
Intramural basketball is played as street-style basketball–3v3, 11 points to win, make-it-take-it, and best of three. Organized chaos, if you will. Games are fast paced, making it a great way to get your cardio in and break a good sweat.
“Everybody’s getting the ball, everybody’s touching the rock,” says Jason Mashuri, also a Liberal Arts major at JCCC.
Intramural basketball meets on Thursday nights from 6-8 p.m. If you’re debating whether or not to go, go!
