Dance Team Coach Guides Championship Squad To Express ‘True Selves’

Amy Sellers is the head coach of the JCCC women’s dance team, and has been for 15 seasons. In the last three years, her team has won three Grand Championship titles, one for each year. These are just a few of the awards and titles that Sellers and her team have obtained over her long career. What does it take to obtain such recognition, and what does it mean to be a Golden Girl?

“It’s a little bit of a guessing game. Dance is subjective, so everybody’s opinion can vary, it’s not point based like other sports,” Sellers said. “The entertainment aspect is a big portion of it… you want everybody to love the routine, so that’s what we have to think about with song choice, costuming, and choreography.”

In April, JCCC’s Golden Girls will be going to Orlando, Florida for the first time to perform for the growing community college division for Jazz and Hip Hop dancing. But, dance isn’t all about competition. Behind the twists and twirls is a lifestyle of self-improvement, dedication, and communication.

“Dance really helps people become their true selves. It’s a form of expression when you can’t always find the words,” Sellers said. “It’s kind of like an outlet… a way to show all these different emotions without ever having to speak a word.”

Like many coaches at JCCC, Sellers’ love for dance helps her impact young athletes who are looking to make a name for themselves and grow as individuals; just one of many things that sets our athletic program apart from the rest.

“Over the years, all of the dancers that I’ve had come through our program,” Sellers said. “I’ve loved watching them grow… they get to truly find and express themselves, and they get to do it together.”
