Have you ever felt overwhelmed, lost or frustrated with coursework? Especially those infamous math, science and writing classes? Then it may be time to pop into the first floor of the library. No matter how frustrated you feel, JCCC wants you to succeed, and the Academic Resource Center and the Academic Achievement Center are the best resources you can use.
The Academic Resource Center offers tutors for math, science and writing. The Academic Achievement Center and Language Center offer tutoring for all language classes at JCCC, along with law classes, social sciences and more.
“So the writing center helps with anything that is writing-related, so a lot of what we get is stuff like composition or English classes,” said Rob Meehan, the administrative assistant for the writing center. “But we also help with lab reports, history papers, applications for jobs or other colleges. If it has words and letters in it, we can help you with it.”
When you walk into the Student Resource Center, you are greeted by a help desk, and each of the four corners has a tutoring center. If you need tutoring, it’s recommended that you set up an appointment online, but you can also do “drop-in” sessions.
“It’s mostly a drop-in service, but if students want to set up recurring appointments, they can do that,” said Antonio Ortiz, a tutor at the math center. “A recurring appointment can be 90 minutes for the week, and that can be split up into an hour appointment, then a 30-minute appointment or two 45-minute appointments.”
At the math center, not every tutor is knowledgeable in every type of math, so they always make sure to have at least one tutor available for every type of math.
The Academic Achievement Center and the Language Center are located on the first floor of the library, and both can be found in a short hallway that is connected to the Academic Resource Center. The Academic Achievement Center includes everything that is not covered within the writing, math and science centers. Since the AAC has to have more specific tutors, it is recommended that you check their tutors schedules on the JCCC website or set up an appointment with the specific tutor. The Academic Achievement Center also offers process tutors.
“Process tutoring is going to be for students who need help with time management, organization and students who may want help adjusting to being a college student,” said Kaitlin Krumsick, director of the Academic Achievement and Language centers.
The Academic Resource Center also offers free bookable study rooms. The sizes range from one to eight people per room. They are available to book on their website for up to two hours, and they offer a 15-minute grace period.
Overall, the Academic Resource Center and the Academic Achievement Center have amazing resources that are free for all students. Next time you find yourself in a pickle, be sure to make your way to the first floor of the library.
